Volume 61, Issue 18
Written and reported by Art Levine

Winston Creel, standing in for absent President Bill Peloquin, started the meeting by inviting Rick Price to lead us in the pledge. The Ashcroft-Blackburn-Duncan-Young quartet led us in God Bless America and Smile, to the accompaniment of pianist Don Ludwig. Tom Meyer -- our Sergeant-at-Arms and Rotarian of the Week -- reminded us in these difficult times that tolerance of all races, creeds, and ethnicities is a fundamental value of our nation -- and that we should be grateful for the "noble experiment" in democracy under our laws and constitution.

Leslie McCarthy won the opportunity drawing and correctly identified 1621 as the year of the first Thanksgiving celebration. Chris Fraschetti introduced guests Dick Hopping (guest of Dan Kiernan), Nancy Wimer ( Warren's wife) and visitor Rabin Lai of Fullerton Sunrise. Finemaster Blackburn recognized Winston Creel $20 for a successful real estate sale, Greg Franklin for a spousal birthday, Tom Meyer for his 19th anniversary, and himself for his 57th birthday.

The Harbor Cruise of Lights is 12/15; contact Terri Grassi. For tickets to our annual fund raising concert, this year scheduled for January 26th, contact Winston Creel.

Warren Wimer and Jim Young reported on their on-going efforts to raise $25,000 for the naming of a large meeting room at Cal State Fullerton the "Fullerton Rotary Room." Nearly $10,000 has been raised to date, including a $500 contribution from the Modesto Rotary Club in thanks for Jim Young's Paul Harris presentation. One or more display cases will also promote our club's history.

Mike Oates highlighted the continuing Rotary License Plate campaign, and the need for greater participation in order to collect the required sign-ups. The DMV would return $50 of the initial $75 fee to our club, and $15 for each annual renewal thereafter. Thus, this program would not only promote Rotary visibly, but also financially.

The program was newest-nine craft talks. Leslie McCarthy described her interesting and mobile childhood as she and her four younger siblings followed their Dad across the country to Florida, Wisconsin, and Central California as he pursued graduate degrees. Service has always been important in her family, and Leslie has long experience with such organizations as 4H and Soroptimists, as well as having volunteered in teaching and other activities. In fact, she has assisted with our Top 100 high school scholar recognition program for at least seven years! Born at Camp Lajuene, N.C., Leslie is a graduate of CSUF and has been working with Jim Thompson since 1982; she is now part owner of Fullerton Insurance and was profuse in her gratitude to Jim for making it possible. Leslie has been married for 16 years to a "Tom Selleck lookalike;" they have two children.

Bob Clark, Jr. described Bridgeport, CT as a "good place to be from." At age two Bob Sr. and Mom moved the family to Whittier/La Habra, where Bob has early memories of playing amid orange groves. But it was then back to CT, where Bob achieved Eagle Scout two days after his 14th birthday. Then back to CA, where he attended Sunny Hills H.S. and Dad started in the real estate biz. Bob suffered through a serious illness while in high school, but then met beloved wife (now of 26 years) Pam while they both attended the Claremont Colleges (Ed.-yea!) as does son Bobbie currently. Bob also attended Stanford Business School, and worked for American Can and for IBM before joining McGarvey Clark Realty, of which he became President in 1984. The firm was sold to Coldwell Banker in 1999. Bob is active in various civil and professional organizations, has returned to selling real estate, and is an avid wine enthusiast.
