Volume 65, Issue 2 Rota-Scribe: Randy McFarland

President Joyce Capelle called our meeting to order by asking Jim Blake lead us in the pledge and Howard Wood let us as we sang “In the Good Old Summertime” in deference to the over 100 degree temperatures he endured during his recent venture to Salt Lake City.  The traditional “Smile” helps us cool off and mentally prepare for a prayer by LeRoy Fulton. No one was injured in the rush to the food line, due to strategic pre-positioning maneuvers by our experience members.

GUESTS

Dan Fisk introduced a few select Rotarians who in tern introduced their guests, like Marsha Gallivan invited by Diane Massey-Jones. Mark Geiss introduced John Brown, Minard Duncan announced the presence of his fiancé Colleen Townsend Thomas, Daniel Kang introduced Joe Chung and Rick Crane introduced Theresa Harvey who is reportedly getting very close to becoming one of us!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Rick Crane invited interested persons to sign up for the “All Fullerton Rotary Club Fellowship Fullerton Flyers Baseball Game Outing”. It will feature full access to the Luxury Suite and promises to be a great time on July 24th at 1PM.
  • Bob Radde informed us that the Sunny Hills Interact Club’s car wash rescheduled date is TBA.

RECOGNITIONS

Jim Williams reminded all members to determine who their “Tattle-Tale” will be and to report it to him ASAP on the “Rotary Rat Line.”

A new format for this part of the meeting was inaugurated by Jim when he asked Jack Hayes to perform the honors.  Jack immediately (but unsuccessfully) tried to resign this duty, but proceeded sportingly with several rounds of “Who’s In Jeopardy Now?” (Inspired by Art Levine and his wife last week) This game requires questions as the answers to the answers which are the questions.  It seemed as though this was going to be the afternoon’s program, but Joyce developed a initiated an insistent interest in ringing the Rotary bell sitting in front of her, thus bringing the meeting back under control.

(Recognition - ctd.) Before we were “saved by the bell”, Jack gave the group many opportunities to understand how the game worked, but I think many were still confused at the end. Bill Kincaid’s wife was recognized as the first one to turn in a Tattle-Tale form. The Guinea pigs for this week also included Terri Grassi, Jim Williams, Jim McKamy, Bill Heaton and Chuck Munson, who was once featured on TV’s “Marriage Game”. Congrats to those who had correct answers! I’d divulge the correct answers and who actually uttered them, but then some of you would have no reason to attend the meetings!

RAFFLE

Ed Little correctly answered that Bill McGarvey was our club president in 1964-65.

PROGRAM

Griff Duncan prefaced his remarks with the observation that “Responders” out number “Initiators”  by three to one and then quickly proceeded to discuss the new play at Fullerton Civic Light Opera called “Once On This Island”.  Set in the French Colonized Caribbean Islands, Griff noted a  similarity with the movie, “The Little Mermaid”.  Issues such as prejudice within a race, slavery and the Voodoo  religion were factors in the story line, where a little girl gets rescued from a tree by a childless couple who tell her the story of the island. The girl becomes the lead character of the play. Griff offered us Rotarians a  bonus “heads up” on ticket purchasing. : Due to demographic peculiarities in Fullerton, Sunday afternoons have become the most popular performance, so plan accordingly!

CLOSING THOUGHT by Joyce.

“Experience allows us to make New mistakes instead of old one”.
