Pete Magoski led the pledge followed by songsters Jim Young and Leroy Fulton. God Bless America, and Smile were robustly delivered, accompanied as always by Don Ludwig on the piano. Jim Young delivered an invocation followed by long lines at the buffet table. Prez Joyce announced that as of next week we will proceed directly through the chow line and begin our meal. Opening proceedings will follow. This should allow for more time for the rest of the meeting. Vern Andrews introduced visiting Rotarian Greg Owen (past President, Long Beach Rotary) Guest of Rotarians included Kirt Spauldin (Jim Young), John Brun (Mark Giess), Gloria Radde (Husband Bob), and Greg Lins (son Joe). Prez Joyce inducted the first new Rotarians of the year. Walt Barnes delivered a speech highlighting Rotary International’s many accomplishments, followed by introductions by sponsors. Pat McKinley introduced Fullerton Police Captain Geoff Spalding; Daniel Kang introduced GMI Pastor Shine Kim; Rick Crane introduced Fullerton Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Theresa Harvey.

Guest Finemaster Fred Johnson dinged Wally Swatkowski, Dave Bates, and Walt Barnes for transgressions real or imagined. Don Ludwig was recognized for his 72 birthday. Buck Catlin was recognized for his 87th birthday. Dave Bates won the raffle but could not name the first Prez of Fullerton Rotary (Bill Irwin). He recieved a $10 consolation from Dick Mathewson. Dr. Jim Young delivered the program today. (which was no small fete considering that he sat by himself at the program table at ate three desserts and drank a half gallon of Ice tea!!) Jim talked about the CLE (Continuing Learning Experience) program at Cal State Fullerton. In particular he talked about a study group that he leads called Poetry for Pleasure. Jim read several poems written by past class members and finished his program by reciting “Casey at the Bat”. Prez Joyce closed the meeting with the thought: You can’t do a kindness too soon for you never know when it will be too late. |
