Rotary Club of Fullerton
Board of Directors Meeting

Minutes for Meeting of November 11, 2003

Present: Mathy, Capelle, Jones, Franklin, Kawase, Jahncke, Andrews, Ashcroft, Oates and Myhre.

Absent: Dowds, Haynes, and Schoen.

Secretary Jahncke: October Minutes approved.

Three new proposed members: David Borsari, Criminal Law, by Dale Hardner; William Baugh, Dermatology, by Franki Berry; John Derry, Hope University President, by Leroy Fulton. All approved.

Kawase: Treasurer - Money in the bank (Checks are coming in from the recent billing.) $44,361 in the checking account.

Tom Meyer, Membership: Application for Charitable Donations have been handed out; Committee had felt that there was a need to expand the donations, and possibly cut some of the "previous recipients". Discussion seemed to move toward smaller awards to more recipients, and promoting youth causes to allow for better distribution. Want to look for recognition, matching funds, and specific projects - not rent and electric bills. Look for impact - i.e., our donation to the assistance league was VERY SIGNIFICANT to that group. How may people were touched by the donation. Meyer: Allow more recipients; have 2 levels of donations; and favor Youth - Motion carried.

Possible new members; Lisa Doebler, Leslie Savage, and Mike Cleresi; the new, yet un-named Fullerton College President.

Chris Lowe has joined the Rotary Sunrise club; Joyce to talk with Chris, find his actual status. Jahncke had removed Chris from our club roster.

Jones: International - Mexico Project: Bill, Wally, Jeff and Claude visited the El Sauzal Orphanage project last week. Electrical work has reduced bill to 30% of previous; service is more reliable and stable. Visit determined that minor clean up work would reduce open electrical exposure. Proposed a weekend "Rotary Project"; to have a hands on work project - to complete some of the minor electrical work and perform a roof replacement on a small building, plus enjoyment of the kids. Possibly bring some clothing and/or toys. The nearby Hotel Coral (a first class hotel) could be a gathering place to spend the night, and make a Rotary weekend happening, possibly in February. Claude looking for someone to promote and plan the happening. Separately - on December 6 will be a food distribution day at the El Sauzal Orphanage - approximately 30 tons of food to be distributed to the community at that time.

Joyce Capelle: Fellowship lunches are on the way.

Andrews: School signs - "Protect our Children" - 24 schools identified - 18 elementary, 3 Jr High, and 3 High schools. The cost is $45 each, with 2 per school, (total of 48 signs) we are talking about a $3,000 project. The other clubs are committed to helping. We are approaching the school and city maintenance department to see about those groups covering the cost of erection. It was brought up that we should consider Buena Park High School, since it is in Fullerton; What about Sonora and La Habra High? Also, it makes sense to include some of the private schools - i.e., St Juliana and Rosary. Vern will keep us posted on his progress. He has a meeting with the supplier (Cliff Nelson, Orange Rotary.)

Ashcroft: Promotion of the Concert is well underway, with promotion taking place initially in the “free” distribution mode - i.e., water bills, Chamber News Bulletins, etc.

Meeting adjourned at 8:50 am. Next Meeting to be at the City Maintenance yard on December 9, 2003.
