Program- Bob Hathaway
Bob introduced Dane Masseth-Jones who thanked Cathy Gach and Ed Atkinson for their help in arranging the program. We had five students from Fullerton High compete in a Speech Contest. Judges were Joyce Cappelle, Terri Grassi, Keith Mills and Jim Young. Randy McFarland was the tie breaker if needed. Bob Radde was the time keeper.
Instructor Sal Tinajera informed us that the Fullerton High Speech and Debate Team consistently ranks in the top 200 schools in the United States. They finished 5th in the nation recently. The Speech and Debate Team is volunteering at Nicolas Jr. High and coaching 140 English Language Learners and Special Education students and are
getting great results. The contestants did a great job with the topic of Rotary Cares. Each of us learned a lot about what Rotary is doing internationally.
1st Place - Pricilla Merritt - She praised John Phelps for the
support he gave her at the beginning of her high school years in
Speech and Debate.
2nd Place - Andrea Slobodien
3rd Place - Amanda Rippy
Runners Up - Shirae Christie and Vanessa Garcia
All students did a good job. The judges had a difficult picking the
winners.
Fullerton Rotary Foundation - Vern Andrews
The Fullerton Rotary Foundation has a Rotary Endowment Fund that has
been developed over the past 17 years from current and former Rotary member estate contributions and Club contributions. Based on the Foundation's Gifting Mission Statement, the Endowment profits are to be used for one-time special awards to the Fullerton community. Since 1999, these funds are in addition to the annual Club Community Awards. For Rotary year 2006-07, over $10,000 was provided for the completion of its three year school award program to 23 Fullerton Schools. Four schools consisting of Richman and Fisler Elementary Schools, Parks Jr. High and Fullerton High were provided awards to purchase library books, music equipment, school campus benches and to establish poor performance student council services at Richman. In the current Rotary year of 2007-08, a total of $14,000 was provided
to the All the Arts for All the Kids Foundation for a partial Musical Education school bus payment and musical instruments to out-fit the bus, and to the Fullerton Academy of the Arts.
