Volume 67, Issue 26 Rota-Scribe: Leslie McCarthy

THE Rotary Club of Fullerton was opened by our own President Tom Meyer.  Pledge of Allegiance was led by Bob Savage. Howard Wood, Randy McFarland, Lee Brockett, Bekah Havard and guest Joe, were accompanied by Don Ludwig.   We had to get our bibs out to sing “On Top of Spagetti” and then “Smile’d” at the mess we made.

Invocation was lead by Ken Kaisch who became a serious man requesting a blessing on our children and an appreciation of their open and direct honesty in their relationships.

Guests were introduced by Dan Owl+Lean:

Walt Johnson from Rotary South came slumming to “THE Rotary Club of Fullerton.”  Don Bankhead’s treasurer from his campaign committee Joe attended; Theresa Harvey introduced us to Colette Cauffman from Colette’s Catering; Drew Napolin  brought returning attorney Marty to his table; J Richey  introduced us to Theresa Harvey’s boss, Tina Davis, Fullerton Chamber Chair; Vern Andrews tried to bring talent to our singing style with Marv Hewitt his barber shop singer; Diane Masseth-Jones’ guest was Steve Markin who is involved with gift planning for OC; Dan Ouweleen brought his wonderful daughter Christie and Jimmy Willliams attended with his lovely wife Sally.  Mark McGee announced an early ditch of the meeting before introducing his guest (fine next week?) Nick Fuscardo.   Mark also donated his box at Honda Center for an impromptu $1,000 fundraiser for Nick’s Hornets.

Theresa Harvey had 2 big events, on 1/13 her husband got very old and she wheeled him to dinner with the kids he reciprocated for their 25th anniversary on 1/15/08.

John Derry’s wife got year younger on 1/15 and he provided her with flowers and a cake, making us all look bad on our spouse’s birthdays.  Gary Goodson celebrated both he and his wife’s birthdays last week.  Captain Richard Daybell (Go Indians) was 68 years young on the 18th.  He then turned 69 years old on the 19thEd Atkinson was fined $50 for missing our meeting and Frank Kawase was fined double his estimated age for ducking out early (wait…new fundraiser idea).  Bill Kincaid’s wonderful wife Shirley had a birthday.  As he announced she is 12 days older than Bill, we should be able to come up with her age if we listen carefully when he is honored for his next birthday.

Claire McKenna took a bow as CEO of YMCA who among some other things is responsible for power generation for Southern California Edison as part of her job duties.   Dr. James Young at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday will be reading from a series of voices from America including excerpts from Martin Luther King Jr.  And finally, Nate Kvetny who owns 39 hats and 129 ties was fined $129 for not wearing any of them after he retired.  They will be auctioned off at a later date to pay for magic lessons so he may maintain the Las Vegas title of “Entertainer of the Year” bestowed upon him by a true judge of the performing arts, Jimmy Williams.

President Tom announced the drawing would be for $175.  In spite of a strong feeling about the apparent lack of jokers in the deck he passed the 4 way test by showing them to us.  Don Bankhead drew and pulled an ace of hearts,  and $10 was donated to Don by Bill Hite.  By the way did anyone see President Tom put the jokers back in the deck?

Jim Williams took over the mike and begged for applause.  Las Vegas entertainer of the year as voted by the Las Vegas Committee on Geriatrics, our very own Dr. Nate Kvetny was given a rousing welcome to the platform.  Opening with jokes picked up from the newspaper, he started happy until the atmosphere became so cold he saw a politician with his hands in his own pockets.  Nate was incomplete until he married and then he was finished.  As per his wife, sometimes he works and sometimes he doesn’t so he appreciates our sympathy.  Magic Bill Mathy had a deck of cards.  Terri Grassi was volunteered for a trick as Nate’s CPA, (not plug, really a complaint.)  She picked a 6 of hearts, stop, Nate doesn’t want to see it, names and phone numbers were exchanged, the audience was flashed, Nate will be working alone from 8:00 to 8:05, Jimmy has a problem, President Tom was sent a picture of Nate’s best side (or was that backside), Nate knifed Jimmy and Terri was stabbed dead center.  Chief Pat, I think we need you!

Dan Owl+Lean provided us with a wonderful Craft Talk as introduced by Bill Klinghoffer.  He did a great job with a tough act to follow.  Dan has been in Fullerton since 1993.  He has three kids, 22-Christie, 19-Ken and 16-Rob.  Eileen is his wonderful wife.  Dan grew up in Rochester NY and has great parents who are alive and well back home. His parents taught him truly, Service Above Self.  He played baseball, basketball and was also involved in scouts.  Dan has worked since the age of 10 and by 18 was managing an apartment complex with over 200 units. He put himself through NY State University in Marketing and worked for a semi conductor equipment company for about 11 years.  During a marketing trip he bumped into a cousin of his who lived in Fullerton since the early 70’s who had just become involved in Pacific Miniatures in LA.  Cousin Fred and Dan had a great time and Dan was sold on building something of value to enrich lives.  Dan and family moved to California to take the leap into Pacific Miniatures and is still there today.  He has been a youth baseball manager, scout leader, and is having fun being involved in a creative exciting business.  Pac Min has been around since 1946 and was started by a couple of model makers from McDonnell Douglas.  They have 92 employees in Fullerton and operations in Mexico and China.  Sales offices are also in Simi Valley, Portland OR, and Rochester NY.  His company provides Visually Dynamic Marketing Solutions for building key business relationships.  His firm can build models as large as 1:1 scale, cutaway models down to silverware on the table, high precision modeling for engineering fit, form and function, fine art graphics for paintings of aviation scenes and also promotional solutions for sculptures for the Oscars of the aviation industry.  He likes to think that they capture a little aviation history, one model at a time.

Tom Meyer closed with “Markets as well as mobs respond to human emotions...Stay Positive, Smile and Go Forward.”
