Opening, Singing and Thoughts We began reasonably promptly with Dick Mathewson leading us in The Pledge of Allegiance Griff Duncan and Grifftones accompanied by Don Ludwig led the large crowd in singing America the Beautiful and the ubiquitous "Smile". Dan and Ann Kiernan's grand-daughter knew the word to the first one, which puts her ahead of a couple of our regulars. Dean Heiser would have made the Earlham Quakers proud by reminding us that God gave us two ears and two feet in apparent hopes that we would listen and walk more than we talked. It is probably not wise to disappoint the Lord. A Gaggle of Visitors Bob Savage was enthusiastic is his introductions of visiting Rotarians. Ron Newell, Dick Boyle and Joe Hernandez Guests included: Greg Beck, CPA Chuck Munson Announcements RI President -elect Glenn Estes will be in Costa Mesa for a receptions and dinner on 9/20- $50- see President Bill. Poker Night for all three Rotary Clubs First Bank of Fullerton 8/15 . . . $4 buy in see Jim McKamy Jim Hogg bid us adieu as he returns to Minnesota (full time). We will miss you Jim, and wish you well. President Bill presented a 1947 newspaper clipping to Buck Catlin which featured Lt/Cdr and Mrs. A. B. Catlin and a wedding cake. Bill also announced with sadness the recent death of Peggy Hathaway, wife of Bob Hathaway. Chris Fraschetti thanked all present for their thoughts and prayers in support of Linda and Tom Meyer. Linda is doing much better. John Kunau reported on the splendid progress being made by his wife Sally as she deals with chemotherapy. |
Don Ludwig was made Rotarian of the Week for his terrific piano playing and deservedly so. Fund-raising Tony Amato donated four Fullerton Rotary shirts for auction. They were purchased via the clever marketing skills of Jim Blackburn to Lee Brockett, Jim Blake, John Phelps and Diane of the YWCA. Tony will happy to order others for a set price. Fred Johnson was recognition chair for the day and used an interesting, albeit confusing, collections of recognitions and sports questions to extract coin of the realm from: Bob Jahncke for scooting to Starbucks, Mike Oates for his picture on front page of the OCR, Chris Fraschetti for golfing prowess and that of her spouse. Birthdays (self or spouse): Scott Dowds, Dale Hardner, Don Ludwig, Wally Bartelt ( Linda). Two Programs Bill and Robyn Mathy presented a Power Point and narration of their visit to the RI Convention in Brisbane and thanked the Club for sending them as well as bringing them back (the last part of was approved on a very close vote.) Paul Kiernan, CPO USN, recently returned from service in Iraq provided us with a saga of his unit's adventures in search of bridges to build and ordnance to destroy in Irag. Chief Kiernan's unit was attached to Seabees, who followed the USMC into Iraq in the initial invasion of that nation. Paul was with the Marines as Baghdad fell, and the de-militarization of that nation began. He spoke well, but humbly and the work and accomplishments of the US forces. He also spoke well of the majority of the Iraqi people and their desire to be relieved of the yoke of poverty that has accompanied the increasing dysfunction of the former regime. No American cannot help but be extremely proud of Paul and the hundreds and thousands of other US and coalition troops, who are doing the jobs they were trained to do and are doing so well. Unless you missed and how could you, CPO Kiernan's understandably proud parents are Dan and Ann Kiernan. |
