Announcements

Sign up for the Tri-Club Picnic – Friday, August 23rd starting at 2 p.m. at Clark Park in Fullerton.  Remember the Elks will be dark on Wednesday, August 21st.  Talk with Terri Grassi or Bill Hite if you have questions.

Calling all ball players!!  Coach Rick Price is looking for a few good men and women for the Picnic Softball Tournament.

President Mike Oates reminded us of the District's focus for the coming year:  1) Polio eradication, 2) Increased membership and 3) Rotary license plates

Rotarians of the Month were announced for their outstanding service to the community through efforts outside of Rotary.  Dennis Ulrich, John Phelps, Bill Peloquin, Bill McGarvey, Dave Bates, Allan Bridgford and Gordon Bagne all exemplify "Service Above Self."

Keith Mills held the ticket for a battery of questions regarding the Tour de France.  He scored a 90% and was awarded $45 from a $55 pot by Prez Mike.  Guest Finemaster and notable accountant Chuck Munson promptly fined the Prez for his poor math skills (90% of $55 is $49.50)  Keith received his additional $4.50!

Finemaster Munson recognized the Thompson anniversary, Ed Little's spousal birthday and other birthdays:  Bob Bean (70), Bill Heaton (64), Dick Hopping (74) and Dick Glaus (72).

Mike Escalante reported on the 1st Annual Sunny Hills H.S./Rotary Yacht Race or "Can Your Boat Float?"  Student James Franz filmed and edited a video of the ill-fated voyages.  Many Rotarians attempted to cruise (sadly, most didn't make it past the diving board) the Sunny Hills swimming pool in student-made vessels.  Rotarians who participated include: Mike Oates, Wally Bartelt (and wife, Linda), Julianne Haynes, Dick Mathewson, Damon Dragos, Chris Meyer, Mike Escalante, Winston Creel, Chris Lowe and Bob Clark, Jr.

Craft Talks

Minard Duncan

Minard was born in Anaheim in a house his grandfather built on Broadway.  He is the youngest of four children and was named after his dad’s boss.  Yes, he has had lots of nicknames.  Minard was quite the ballplayer (Coach Rick?) and was recruited several times by the Pittsburgh Pirates.  He went to college instead at San Diego State.  Then he was recruited in a different way to the U. S. Army during the Korean War.  He returned to finish his education at Long Beach State and get his teacher credential.  He then began a career of education here in Fullerton, serving as a teacher then as principal for many Fullerton schools.  He has received many awards and stays active in the retired teacher association.  During his talk, he announced his candidacy for the Fullerton Elementary School Board.  Minard has two children, 3 grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

Dick Glaus

Dick graduated from Fremont High School in Los Angeles and took a job at a Standard Oil gas station in Huntington Park.  He and a buddy decided they could do it themselves and bought a small station.  Standard Oil took notice and built them a new station.  Dick was on his way to the American Dream.  He and his partner were offered the service contract from AAA, which involved tow trucks and a lot of business.  They then went on to buy a specialized service repair shop and a used car lot.  The city's Redevelopment department offered them a deal to sell their property.  Dick had an auto parts store in a strip mall that they owned.  Dick really enjoyed working with his customers.  He is married to wife, Sandy and they have 5 children and 9 2/3 grandchildren.
