Happy New Year from your Rotagram staff (Bill Schenk, Buck Catlin, Jim Blackburn, Minard Duncan, & Leslie McCarthy)!!
Today's meeting got off to a rocky start, one minute late and a long line at the Irish Coffee station. Prez Mike pointed out that there were only 357 days left in the year. Mike then led the club in the pledge of allegiance followed by song leader Griff Duncan assisted by Jim Young and Leroy Fulton, who led the club in My Country 'Tis of Thee, followed by Smile and accompanied by Don Ludwig on piano. Jim Thompson gave the thought for the day and reminded us that Attitude plays an important role in life and called on all Rotarians to continue to spread Positive Attitude throughout our community. Bill Heaton introduced visiting Rotarians and guests: Ron Ortiz, from Yorba Linda Sunrise was the only visiting Rotarian. Rotarians with guests included: Newest Rotarian Bob Radde and wife Gloria, Amy Kluth with YWCA director Diane Masseth-Jones, Tom Meyer hosted Dale Hardner (again) and Craig Walker, Larry Larson introduced Pat Verwiel, and Nate Kvetny introduced his friend Arnie. Honorary Member Roy Harvill also visited today. Prez Mike presented Don Ludwig with Rotarian of the Week honors. There is a whale-watching trip scheduled for this Saturday (Jan 11). A report from survivors of this trip will undoubtedly be given at our next meeting. Amy Kluth wants everyone to know that somebody named Mike Oates will be honored as Man of the Year at the annual YWCA Chocolate Fantasy on Friday, Feb 28. News Flash: Vern Andrews loses again!! Vern has probably won the opportunity drawing more times than any other member. He never complains about not winning the big money. He's way ahead on the $10 consolation prize (this week paid by Caroline Tormey).

Frank Kawase inducted Bob Radde (sponsored by Dick Glaus) and Cathy Gach (sponsored by Greg Franklin). Bob Hathaway received his plaque and pin as well. Frank talked about the societal changes he has seen in Rotary in the last 25 years. Caroline Tormey unceremoniously stripped Nate Kaventy of the tattered and torn POT-PASS and auctioned it off to Allyn Lean for 52 dollars outbidding the team of Amy Kluth and Terri Grassi by one dollar. Caroline recognized birthdays for Greg Franklin (41) and Paul Dudley (56). Don Bankhead was recognized for Wife Carol's birthday, as was Dick Glaus for Sandra's birthday. Al T was recognized for a recent anniversary. Prez Mike stood in for missing past Prez Peloquin and officiated while the club elected Greg Franklin to the office of President-elect-elect by acclimation. The process was so easy for Mike that he also proposed election via acclimation of the entire slate of the Board of Directors. The club responded by unanimously electing the anonymous slate of candidates. Congratulations whoever your are! Jim Williams gave a Rotary history lesson with props as he explained to the club the origination of Irish Coffee & Humor Day, which originated with Paul Harris. Members offering alleged humor were: Jack Hayes, Nate Kvetny, Dennis Ulrich, Julianne Haynes, Dan Kiernan, Jim Thompson, Don Bankhead (twice), Amy Kluth, Ray Hansen, Minard Duncan, Dick Mathewsen, and Jim Blackburn who read a variation of Who's On First provided by Lee Brockett. (Blackburn gets honorable mention for the ad-lib of the day!)
