The Honorable Mike Oates opened the meeting by calling upon Julie Kemp to lead us in the Flag Salute. Our Singing Wheels, led by Jim Blackburn, directed us in the songs of Americaand Take Me Out to the Ball Game. Al Tetreault told us a story about walking with God and then led us in prayer. Another nice opening! Guests/Hosts and Visiting Rotarians introduced by Damon Dragos: Guests: Ken Barry (son-in-law) - Bob Radde, Laura Panos - Julie Kemp, Lonny Blake -Tom Meyer, Kathy Ikola (Fullerton School District) - Cameron McCune, William Im - Chung H. Lee. Two new Rotarians were given a badge, pin, 4 Way Test, roster and a Rotarian certificate and were welcomed with resounding applause. Were glad to have Craig Walker sponsored by Tom Meyer and Diane Jones sponsored by Terri Grassi in our group. Announcements: April 27 - Greg Franklin - Fullerton High School Academy of the Arts at Plummer Auditorium. Claude Jones told us that enough money was raised to complete the electricity project in the orphanage in Baja, California. Great job, Claude! Gordon Bagne missed the Question of the Week. Fine Master Dan Kiernan went wild with fines: Birthday for Mark McGee. Spouse Birthday for Bill Schenk. 36 year Anniversary cost Bob Savage $72! (Jim Blackburnwas relieved when he realized that this is one of the few months he does not have annanniversary.) Now the big ones: Being rude cost Dick Jones $100. All CPA's were asked to stand now that tax season is over and it cost them $100 each. Mark Zane tried to reason his way out of why he did not shake Prez Mikes hand twice. It didnt work - fined $100. Cameron McCunes announcement of Parks Jr. High receiving California Distinguished School status cost him $50. Dick Boyle was fined $25 because Kiernan is sick of seeing him here as a visiting Rotarian. (The rest of us love you, Dick) Not acknowledging Passover cost Prez Mike $25 and wishing Peace Throughout the World cost Nate Kvetny $30. Wow! Dan is tough! Blackburn ended this section with the story of a dozen look-a-like Saddam Husseins. They all applauded when they heard the good news that he was alive. Sadness overcame them when they heard the bad news that he had lost one of his legs. Dan promptly fined him. Before introducing the program, David Schoen introduced three Eastside Christian School students from Jamaica who earned scholarships to the University of Texas, El Paso. They are the first graduates of Eastsides Operation Impact - a program designed to prepare students to go back to their native countries and make a difference. David introduced choral director Andy Alvarez and accompanist Catherine Forbush. Under their direction and accompaniment we were royally entertained with songs from Eastside Christian School Chamber Singers and the All Girls Ensemble. Each group sang 4 songs. Their fabulous presentation received a standing ovation. President Oates closed the meeting with the comment "Evil happens when good men do nothing." |
