Volume 61, Issue 20
Written and reported by Jim Blackburn

Prez Bill opened the meeting on an uncommonly chilly November afternoon. After the Pledge of Allegiance, we were led in singing by Griff Duncan and a sextet of Rotarians and the playing of Mike Oates. The latter later provided dining music from various bits of musical theatre including the Man of La Mancha, Showboat, etc.

Art Levine was the source of a fine Thought for the Day on the topic of the damage that words can do and impossibility of total retraction.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests were ably introduced by Bob Savage. They were as follows:

Dick Hopping; guest for the last time of Dan Kiernan; Chris Meyer guest of Buck Catlin; Dr. Jo Ann Brannock guest of Chris Fraschetti; Kevin Zeiger guest of Jim Lapak.

The Rev. Jon West had winning ticket, but was thoroughly stumped by Dr. Peloquin's question and received $10 consolation prize compliments of Larry Larsen.

Sports Medicine

Greg Franklin introduced his Chiropractor and a prominent sports medicine practitioner, Doug Anderson, DC. Dr. Anderson is also a Cal State Fullerton alumnus. Doug's message in a nutshell was that consistency and moderation in terms of rest, spirituality, fuel and exercise are the keys to living longer. We are all genetically disposed to eat and live in ways that are not best for us. Engineering and modern life have changed our lives and environments without changing our bodies. Water provides essential hydration, lubrication, etc. that improve almost all bodily functions, i.e. frequent drinking of water and whizzing are good for you. Many other beverages provide "empty calories", i.e. fairly high caloric intake, but you are still hungry, so you still eat stuff and take in more calories. Fruit and vegetable intake needs to increase and carbohydrates should be consumed in a manner that matches body's needs. In general, the more processed a food is the worse it is for you. Dr. Anderson answered some tough questions about sports supplements, etc., and was a fine representative of his profession as well as his alma maters.

Omitted Recognitions from Nov. 21 (with apologies from Bill Schenk)
