Prodigal Prez Returns..
Returning from the wilds of Ohio and Pennsylvania, Prez Bill started on time, and Pete Magoski led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Griff Duncan and the "Boys" led us in "Home on the Range". in loving memory to the late George Klimpel and "Smile". Dick Mathewson jettisoned his planned Thought for the boy in favor of a reminder to tell folks how much they mean to you because you never know when one of you may not be around tomorrow.

Music of the Season... Prez -elect Mike Oates favored us with dining music, e.g. "Exodus", "Moon River" and "It was a very good day". Each one reminding us musically that Bill is on the way out, and we should treasure or merely relish the fact that we are getting rid of him.

Announcements and what not... *Bill Schenk picked an easy day to introduce guests. Tom Popplewell of CSUF Advancement was the guest of Dick Rocke. . *Bob Clark Sr. was. the Rotarian of the Week, but his progeny, Bob Clark Jr. indicated that his parents were in Alaska.

* Griff Duncan bought the winning ticket and correctly indicated that the Articles of Confederation preceded the US Constitution. ‑Judy Pappe has submitted her resignation, and it has been accepted with regret and best wishes. We will need some help with next year's Valentine's Day program.

** DG Jim Parsons will visit our club on 8/14. *Terri Grassi publicized the musical outing and picnic scheduled for Saturday 7/20 in San Juan Capistrano.

* Terri also announced the annual Fullerton Rotary (all three clubs) now scheduled for 8/23. .

* PDG Jim Young again asked for a count for the 7/3 meeting at the Fullerton Rotary Club Room in the Pollack Library at CSUF. Jim also presented a check for Paul Harris' presentation in Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada. *Wally Bartelt provided details about Demotion Night scheduled for 7/10 at the Crown Plaza Hotel in GG. A large crowd is expected to witness the deposing of Doctor Bill.

Program on Culture... The Reverend Dr. Leroy Fulton introduced "Jean" and "London", two Chinese students at Hope International University (HIU) and provided a prologue to our speaker Jennifer Chamberlain. Ms. Chamberlain is in charge of International Student Services at HIU. She hails from Taiwan, but, holds degrees from Cal State San Bernardino. Ms Chamberlain provided valuable information regarding Cross Cultural Communication with emphasis on interactions with the Chinese world. In other cultures, common sense may not be your sense at all, e.g. white flowers connote death in China, and wedding dresses are often red. A very helpful "hand out" was provided including the following:

1. It is not wrong; it's just different
2. It does not matter why; it only matters that (that one is tough on westerners)
3. Never assume anything; always ask.
4. Always look for alternative explanations (this does not necessarily contradict #2 above)
"Most people behave rationally; you just have to discover the rationale."

In the shrinking world in which we live, such programs are needed and enjoyed. Besides some of us need culture, any culture!!!!!!!

Editor's note: Having tasted dog while In our nation's service - I can tell you that it presents a taste somewhere between a really bad steak and wild pig. It was, however, a bit better than the way Yankees prepare some vegetables or a mixed grill had in Dresden.

USMC gets the final word.: Prez Bill regaled us with ADM Starkes' comments on the Marine Corps including certain canine analogies for the branches of military service. I was at a table of Golden Retrievers and Saint Bernards We are glad that we have poodles (USAF) and rotweilerl/ dobermans (USMC), but glad that we are neither.

Having the Air Force in the sky over you and the Marines on the ground in front of you is not a bad plan for survival, but don't reverse those roles!!!
