The room was full when President Bill Peloquin called the meeting to order on this beautiful yet brisk Wednesday afternoon. Judging by the strong attendance this month, could everyone's New Year's resolution have been attend Rotary and bring a guest? And it looks like there are some prospective new members out there as well!

Chris Fraschetti ably led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the "singing wheels" (Jim Blackburn, Jim Young, Ray Ashcroft, Bob Savage, Leroy Fulton and joined by the talented Sandy Fryling) with "God Bless America" and "Smile". Mike Oates provided dazzling musical accompaniment as usual.

Bill Heaton shared stories from Dan Clark, the recent Fullerton Chamber speaker who wrote Chicken Soup for the Soul.  The morale of the stories were don't teach pigs to whistle and be proud to work with young people.

Judy Pappe had the big job of announcing our many Visiting Rotarians and Guests:  Bob Wess, friend of Allyn Lean, from the Newport Sunrise club, Tom Loftus from Madison, WI - Downtown, Don McBride from Brea and Thilo Wolf, an exchange student at CSUF, from Russelsheim, Germany.  Thilo was presented with a Fullerton Rotary flag to take home with him.  Other guests included: Jim McKamy, guest of Wally Bartelt; Paul Thompson, son-in-law of David Schoen; Phyllis Wignal, guest of Amy Kluth; Jonathon Marshall, guest of Debra Koff and Yubin Hong, guest of Chung Lee.

Bob Bean called on Mr. Paul Harris himself, Jim Young, to help present our latest PHF, Bob Clark, Jr.. Jim reminded us the Rotary International Foundation reaches all parts of the world assisting in the eradication of disease, assisting students like Thilo in exchange programs and other assistance and outreach.

Rotarian of the Week was Terri Grassi for the outstanding job she is doing as a new director.

Our Foundation awarded four grants to local teachers for literacy projects at their schools.  Dick Mathewson introduced the award winners:  Kim Bass and Christy Medlin from Valencia Park for family literacy bags; Kathy DeBie, Sharon Gardall, Wendy Lloyd-Davis, Eden Oeding and Roschio Stat from Raymond for take-home literacy bags; Linda Song and Janet Sugimoto from Sunset Lane for technology equipment in the classroom; and Christine Jones from Maple School for a take-home science-based literature. These projects sound very exciting and seeing the faces of the teachers receiving their grant checks was rewarding as well.

Mike Escalante introduced FJUHSD Assistant Superintendent Patricia Howell who presented Chief Patrick McKinley with a check for $612 for the Police Department's Adopt-A-Family program.

As President Peloquin read off the numbers of this week’s opportunity ticket, the question wasn’t could anyone answer it but would anyone claim to have the ticket.  A hesitant Debra Koff made her way to the front and she got it right!!  The answer was a mood ring or as it is also known "a portable biofeedback aid" from the 1970s.

Speech Contest

Greg Franklin emcee'd the annual High School Speech Contest.  The young people, with incredible poise, delivered their presentations sans microphone. This year's Rotary theme "Mankind is our Business" was the theme for each speech and each student expanded upon it uniquely.  The judges, Ronnie Hewett, Minard Duncan and Jim Williams, had a tough task determining the winner.  Third place, freshman (!) Vanessa Koronza, and second place, senior David Braim received certificates and cash prizes.  First place winner, senior Dale Morrison received the same and will go on to the next level representing our club.  Great job to all!!
