President Kaisch welcomed us to another Rotary Club of Fullerton Virtual meeting.

His opening commentary highlighted racism, the seriousness of the problem of racism in our country. He concluded saying, “We all can see that this is a serious problem. Among other things, it means that our young people have it right – America has a serious problem with racism that is not yet remedied. That being said, I do not believe that rioting is the solution.”

As Rotarians, We raise money for a wide variety of causes – go to our local website and the RI international site for more on this. But we don’t give hand-outs. We immunize the world against polio – protecting vulnerable children and allowing them to live in healthy bodies, not crippled ones. We drill water wells in Africa so people can have clean water and not die of cholera and other horrid diseases. We provide money here at home so that Kherut can teach women who have been trafficked as sex workers and those who have aged out of foster care to learn a trade and provide for themselves. We offer a hand up. This is Rotary… and this is YOU.

Club news:

As you know, our Rotary Movie Night was canceled tonight. The governor has banned all public gatherings, whether inside or out. That being said, we will not let this spoil our fun!

Our next contest will be a Covid mask contest, at our regular meeting on Aug. 26. So start prepping now for the wildest possible Covid mask. And remember, with the talent we have in this club, the competition will be pretty stiff.

The club received notification this week that Pat Geary, a longtime member, passed away in December. Pat suffered from serious medical problems for several decades and could no longer come to our meetings.

I received an email on Sunday that Pastor Greg Hickman is leaving us, effective today. He is moving to Colorado Springs to accept a new position where he will be within 30 miles of all of his grandchildren – a compelling reason to move if I ever heard one.

Club members that deserve special recognition for Service Above Self:

A shout out to all who worked so hard setting up our movie night – Farrell Hirsch, Susan Ouweleen, Judy Atwell and Dan Kiernan. These people went the extra mile for all of us. A big thank-you to them.

A huge shout out to Zoot Velasco and the committee working on our Spring fund raiser (Monica Fernandez, Christian Esteban, Daniel Stewart, et al) They are working on a city-wide event with tremendous potential. We all need to make every effort to support their efforts.

And to Daniel Stewart, who suggested that we start our meetings at noon so that we can have a half hour of interaction before our meeting.

Patriotic moment was led by Dan Ouweleen. His introduction included an brief history of the pledge.

· Frank Kawase – first grandchild is celebrating first anniversary. Is taking them out to dinner to commemorate the occasion. $5
· Cathy Gach’s son is expecting child #2 due around Christmas time.
· Joe Lins expecting his first grandson a gift from his son Jeremy and wife . Baby due December. $5 fine
· Gregg Hickman – is also expecting a new grandchild - $10 fine (better collect now!)

Program: Today’s speaker Dawn Bowman, was introduced to present her Craft Talk by her sponsor, Bob Jahncke. Dawn currently works for Craig Walker, Walker Wealth Strategies.

Dawn got her inspiration and first introduction to the stock market from her mother. She explained she had a great childhood – the oldest of three children in her family – including a brother with Downs Syndrome. Her brother’s condition shaped her life and their life centered around family and community. Her parents instilled in her the need to give back and serve.

As a child and teen she was a baton twirler and with her team won the world championship. This helped her reach for top honors and achievements in every aspect of her life. Her athleticism, fitness and physical activity has and continues to be a big part of her life – from baton twirling to aerobics, boxing and cycling. Still enjoys cycling.

Dawn explored a variety of business avenues before settling into a career in the Stock Market and portfolio management where she is today. Walker Wealth Strategies has now developed a comprehensive financial planning including a diverse portfolio of resources for clients … investments, wealth protection and transfer, etc.

2005 Dawn met her husband, Corrie, married in 2007 and now has two children – a son, Nathaniel, and daughter, Isabella. Has volunteered for Crittenton in many capacities and currently focuses on their Angel Tree program. Again, service above self! Her presentation provided members a glimpse into her life.

Traditional for this year, Kaisch, presented her with a special speaker’s gift – Rotary Nuts and tote bag. Perhaps soon a certificate acknowledging her speaking appearance

Kaisch thanked guests for attending and reminded club members that Mayor Jennifer Fitzgerald speaking next week focusing on roads and fiscal needs of the city.

· Closing thoughts after reflecting on the new lockdown:

Basic Flying Rules: (think about this from a pilot’s perspective) glider friend – every landing is a crash landing . Basic flying rules
1. Try to stay in the middle of the air.
2. Do not go near the edges of the air.
3. The edges of the air can be recognized by the appearance of ground, buildings, sea, trees, and interplanetary space. It is much more difficult to fly in those conditions.
