Volume 79 Issue 29 Wed, Feb 05, 2020 Rota-Scribe:Randy Mc Farland

President Mike Cochran prefaced the meeting’s opening by complimenting and thanking the amazing feat by Dan and Susan Ouweleen to convert their home to our club’s venue for a meeting/superbowl viewing party with just three day’s lead time! It was a very enjoyable afternoon and evening!

A special feature of Mike’s meetings is his mention of past events, like the first close up pictures of Venus by US space probe Mariner 10 taken in 1974. Atmospheric pressure is 90 times greater than earth and surface temperature of 485 degrees Centigrade.

Announcements: After Pledge and the Invocation, Mike announced that Ken Kaisch will be attending “PETS” incoming president’s training soon. Rick Crane announced that March 7 is the date for the All City Track Meet. Plan to arrive at 7:30AM to help set up. He also mentioned that deadline for Community Investments awards program is Wednesday Feb. 12. Thad Sandford announced the “Air Force Singing Sergeants” will be performing at the Methodist Church Tuesday Feb. 11 and the YWCA Annual Fundraiser will be Feb. 7th, honoring our own Zoot Velasco and his wife Monette.

Recognitions: - Joe Lins presented Rick Crane two aged but still sealed/unopenend cans of tennis balls. Bill Mathy and Frank Kawasi recognized for their success at the Superbowl party. Joe Arnold celebrated his 50th anniversary with Voiza, Carl Camp and wife Judy had an anniversary and Dan Kiernan and wife Ann had their 57th Anniversary. Karen Xie celebrated her 4th Rotary anniversary.

Program: - Thad Sandford Introduced Mary “Dub” Drees, Chief Philanthropy Office of the St. Jude Memorial Foundation. She mentioned several members of our club who are active in supporting St. Jude Medical Center in various roles.

St. Jude started off as Fullerton Community Hospital in 1931 across the street from Hillcrest Park and opposite the Ralph’s shopping center. In 1954 fundraising started and St. Jude opened in 1957 one year prior to Danny Thomas’ hospital.

St. Jude is the patron saint of Lost Causes. The hospital is now highly respected for its use of leading technology and innovations and has earned and is honored by many awards and is the only hospital in Orange County to have Five Stars for the CMS and Leapfrog awards. St. Jude Medical Center is one of three hospitals with comprehensive stroke centers in Orange County.

One of their well-known fundraisers is the “A walk among The Stars” fashion show and luncheon which will be held October 24.

Providence St. Joseph is the new unified brand and the partnering is more effective for all. Express urgent care has extended hours, 7 days a week.

Deb mentioned that there are many volunteer opportunities and that tours of St. Jude are offered, which she offered to conduct herself.

President Mike shared a concluding quote by Gandhi: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”
