Today’s meeting commenced with the bell, followed by prayer, pledge and song ably administered by Ray Hansen, Pat Hartnett and Griff Duncan respectively. Thank you gentlemen!
President Dan Ouweleen used executive privilege to share some announcements with the membership, including that Francis Hunter had to have another surgery. Jay Kremer fractured his hip and had to cut his vacation short to get back home. We pray for an expedient recovery for both of you and we look forward to your return to Rotary!
WELCOME Guests were introduced by Wolf Knabe and included Travis McShane, hosted by Carl Camp, Sherry Spray, hosted by Drew Napolin, Claudia Harmon, hosted by Dan Ouweleen, and visitors included, Pat Hartnett a returning member. Bill Gillespie, of Fullerton South, joined us just to show off his Stanford baseball hat to razz a few USC fan/members. Adam England of Anaheim Rotary joined us too.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Next week our district governor will be joining us and the club’s board of directors is asked to meet with the DG at 11:30AM prior to the meeting where the DG will be our program.
The Rotaract Club is looking for ways to become more involved.
Next week we’ll be recognizing some Paul Harris Fellows.
Sponsors are being sought Jog-a-thon as are some pop-up sun shades.
Dick Mathewson invited members to become mentors for the “Reading by 9” project he’s been running for the past several years. It is a 21 weeks and commitment that definitely makes a difference in the self confidence of the kids!
Pastor Greg Hickman conveyed a “Hello” from Zoot and then gave members an opportunity to “put service above self”, inviting us to sign up to help clean up after the lunch meetings. Our president has had to do this himself at times. Let’s show our appreciation by stepping up a few times!
Joe Lins invited us to register to the 33rd Annual Fullerton Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast.
Dan Kiernan invited us to the Oct. 8 Boys and Girls Club Fundraising Auction with raffle prizes and wine! Check website for details.
Adam England of The Muck mentioned a Sept. 30 fundraiser. Check website for details.
Claudia Armond represented Coast to Coast and announced their Nov. 5 Gala Casino Night fundraiser.
Vern Andrews announced that the Foundation need suggestions for potential recipients, deadline October 19.
Bob Maxwell invited us to call Sandy Hayes if interested in joining a Fall Fellowship Lunch.
OPPORTUNITY DRAWING
Drew Napolin was “counting his owlets before they hatched” and then realized that he had to pick the “winner” owl to win the $185 pot. He made a valiant attempt but left the opportunity for someone else to win in the near future. The pot will be ramping up faster until we have a winner!
RECOGNITIONS
Raco did a great job keeping everyone on their toes but started off slow as potential victims weren’t present. Jim Williams was asked to share what Opportunity was, and held up a $1.00 bill asking if they recognize an opportunity until someone reached up and grabbed the note. If he tries that again with a Benjamin Franklin, I’ll be sprinting! Howard Minkley got a heads up about Janet’s birthday.
Bill Klinghoffer and Jean have enjoyed 59 years as husband and wife! Congrats! Wild Bill Mathy was fined $2.00 for his Facebook postings of buffalo spotted on his Road Trip adventure with Jim and Sally Williams. They claimed that they are still speaking, but some noted that they were seated at opposite ends of the room!
Dan Kiernan was fined for a new car and Dick Matthewson and a few others were fine free for wearing their Rotary shirts and pins. Carl Camp was fined for not wearing a suit anymore and Scott Dowds was fined for golfing days that made him miss Rotary meetings.
PROGRAM
Mike Cochran introduced Dedrique Taylor, the basketball coach of CSUF who invited us to some upcoming games, the first of which is November 11 a home game. He is a strong believe of positive energy and he doesn’t accept being around negative people. He advises players to face challenges by doing their best each day so they can proceed with confidence that they are prepared. He commented that the Internet has made it easier to learn about players that he wants to recruit. The primary rivals are Long Beach and UC Irvine, Las Vegas and UC Davis.
He is proud that all but one of his players have graduated. Past players come back to interact with the player to share wisdom. Let’s see if we can attend some games and support our Titans! Thanks and best wishes, Coach Taylor!
CLOSING CEREMONY
Drew let us in the four Way Test and President Dan sounded our historic Rotary Bell and closed with his “thought of the week” “The right to speak must be earned by having something worthwhile to say” Winston Churchill
