Volume 75 Issue 41 Rota-Scribe: Joe Arnold

Dick Daybell brought the meeting out of harbor at 12:30 p.m. and extended a special welcome aboard to Joyce Capelle, Chuck Munson, Bill Peloquin and Jeff Hutchinson. Bill Schenk steered us through the Pledge of Allegiance.  Susan Smith navigated the members through a singing of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat as a round and we cruised through our traditional singing of “Smile.”  Pastor Greg Hickman reset our compasses for us with an excellent Invocation.  President Daybell then recognized several members (including Miko Krisvoy, Jim Williams, Scott Dowds and Bill Schenk) who had guests today.

Announcements: Members were reminded of our upcoming Rotary Care event on Saturday, June 4 at Richman Elementary School.  Dick Daybell thanked the members who helped at CLC this past Saturday during Love Fullerton Day.  Two dates members should put on their calendars: 1.) if you show up here next Wednesday, you are in the wrong place—we will be at the Muckenthaler for the Car Show, and 2.) the first Wednesday in June we will be moving to the Elks Club for our meetings.  Dick Daybell also noted there are some “mop-up” tasks at the CLC.  Give him a call if you can help.  You should have been receiving e-mails regarding the upcoming District Conference. Thad Sanford reminded the members that Rotary gives a scholarship in the amount of $30,000 to a student pursing a graduate degree overseas.  They did not have many candidates this year and it is a great opportunity for a young person. Diane Masseth also shared that the YWCA also has scholarships available for women who are re-entering students at Fullerton College and Cal State Fullerton.  Theresa Harvey reminded members of the Fullerton Community Band Summer Concerts in June and July.  She also recognized Scott Dowds for his recent recognition in honor of his service to the community.

Susan Smith had the winning lottery ticket today, but sadly missed out on the winning chip.  The prize rolls over to next week.

Bill Mathy came off the bench to pinch-hit as recognition master.  Randy McFarland did the honors with the fish net and microphone.  Bill opened  up the room to a “brag fest” and self-fines.  Several members celebrated Teacher Appreciation Day by honoring children and relatives who were teachers, including Les McCarthy, Diane Masseth, Griff Duncan, Bill Peloquin, Jeff Hutchinson, Bill Klinghoffer and Dick MathewsonGreg Hickman thanked the club for their help last weekend at CLC and Cathy Gach honored the recent appointment of her flock to an aerospace appointment in Plano, Texas.  Also, Susan Smith celebrated St. Jude’s award of Magnet Designation by the National Association of Nursing (only 8% of the institutions in the country have been so honored).

The program today was the presentation of the Community Investment Awards.  Our Rotary Club partners with the Orange County Community Foundation in providing support to Orange County non-profits.  Julie Pera from the Foundation and Vern Andrews did the honors.  This year’s recipients were All the Arts for All the Kids, Fullerton Academy for the Arts, the Fox Foundation, Southern California Railway Plaza Association, Little Eagle Free, the Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, YWCA, the American Veterans Memorial Foundation, Fullerton Police Department and Crittenton Services.  Bill Schenk offered his congratulations on behalf of the club to Vern Andrews for once again heading up this important activity.  Zoot Velasco shared that our Rotary Club is the only one in north Orange County that partners with the Orange County Community Foundation, an activity that started in 2007.

Jim Williams closed the meeting with a dloghtful story about our RYPEN members work in the library of the Orangethorpe Elementary School on Love Fullerton Day (which will remain “under wraps” for the moment).
