Dan Ouweleen opened the meeting today as El Presidente Dick Daybell was absent – having cataract surgery. Dan welcomed Jim Vanderburg who had been missed lately and Bill Schenk on his return from Hawaii. Jim Blake gave the pledge for the greatest country on earth. Leslie McCarthy gave a thoughtful invocation and Griff Duncan led us in “Irish Eyes are Smiling” in honor of the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day.
In recognition of St. Patrick’s day, many Rotarians were wearing green. It is little known that St. Patrick is the patron saint of all engineers as he engineered the snakes out of Ireland. In Chicago, the river is usually dyed green for this event. A few green shirts were present, however.
Marty Burbank welcomed guest Andy Ersek from North Orange Rotary and Jim and Wilma Peloquin.
Dan Ouweleen notified Rotarians that the meeting on March 30 will be at the Christian Life Center (CLC) on west Wilshire where we will be having our meetings in a few months. The Meridian Health Club will be closing and unavailable for our meetings. In the “Love Fullerton” event on April 30, our club will do an upgrading of the fellowship hall at CLC as our “Love Fullerton” event. Jim Williams suggested that the painters on April 30 might be called the “Holy Rollers”.
The Rotary Dental Clinic will be at the Orangethorpe School on March 19 at 7:30 am. Help from Rotarians is requested. Minard Duncan has been involved with USC students in this effort to help children with dental hygiene for many years.
Rick Crane announced the Rotary Angel Game on April 5 where three Rotary clubs will be participating. A sign-up board was passed. The new date for the 25th annual Rotary Track Meet for Fullerton Schools will be on April 9th, delayed due to rain on the prior date. Rick needs help so please volunteer for this worthy event. Jim Thompson started this event 25 years ago and will be honored at the track meet.
Vern Andrews described the STEM lab at Richmond School that was developed with the assistance of grant funds from Fullerton Rotary. It is intended to give students introductions into scientific and engineering subjects. A 3-D printer is present in the lab.
Jim Vandenberg was commended for his appearance with either Bon Bon (or Bambi) La Rosa? A private joke!
Sandy Hayes, the leader of the Spring Fellowship meeting confessed to an error on the sign-up sheets that has delayed the implementation. All leaders have now been assigned and members should be called in the near future. Sandy was commended for her efforts for seven years in leading these events.
In recognition of St. Patrick’s day, Leslie McCarthy called out several members with questions on St. Patrick and Ireland with winners sharing Jameson’s and Guinness refreshments. Marty Burbank’s wife had a birthday and Marty identified the Irish war with England as lasting for 32 years. Ray Hansen’s wife had a birthday, Louis Kuntz had a birthday and Kim Barlow had a Rotary anniversary.
Scott Dowds and Dan Ouweleen presented the results of the recent survey sent to all members. Of interest is that the average age of all members is 70 years old. In the survey, members rated fellowship and community service as their favorite activities. In line with District 5320’s efforts to assist local clubs, some changes are proposed to open the club to younger members and make meetings more enjoyable. The results of the survey done by Dan Ouweleen will be sent to you if you e-mail your request to him at Dan.O@Pacmin.com.
At the end of the meeting, a lengthy questionnaire was requested to be completed by all members. This questionnaire will be examined to determine if a better club experience can be created.
