Volume 75 Issue 34 Rota-Scribe: Randy McFarland

Our Collage Committee "working it out"
As we shoved off for today’s cruise, our newly-returned from Mexico Captain Dick Daybell welcomed all to settle in as Blake Smith led us in the Pledge and Kim Barlow gamely led us in song, featuring 1¼ A cappella verses of “Michael Row Your Boat Ashore” cleverly chosen to following our traditional nautical theme. “Smile”, and the traditional greeting and hand shaking immediately followed.

We enjoyed a special dessert in the form of professionally served “one scoop or two” ice cream as the basis of our own “create your own masterpiece” Sundae!

Dan Kiernan led us in prayer, concluding with an apropos request that our country choose the best possible leadership!

Recognitions

Mike Oates made a valiant attempt at making up for when he gets picked on during other meetings and started by recognizing John Phelps. Vimal Seth admitted to a birthday next week, Don Ludwig was recognized for his much appreciated piano playing prior to meetings, adding much atmosphere and enjoyment for members and guests. Joe Lins was fined for hugging him, which we as a club are trying to help Mike become accustomed to. . Past president Scott Dowds was feeling his oats bantering back as fast as Mike could ask him questions. Mike pretty much picked on everyone at my table except your’s truly and fellow Rotascribe Jay Kremer. Remember, being a Rotascribe can have benefits.. like learning to mix facts with creative writing to document history! If you’re not interested in being approached to become a Rotascribe, please let me know be E mailing me or letting me know.

Mike then got into asking coaches names, events on this date in history and Angels facts, continuing even as Captain Daybell was trying to grab the microphone.

Captain Daybell presented new member Karen Xie with her official name button with a newest nine blue ribbon. Congrats, Karen! We’re glad to have you aboard!

He is a former member and president of the Fullerton School District Board, former member and President of the Fullerton Civic Light Opera and Board of Directors, former member and President of OC Area Agency on Aging, Seven term elected Chair of the Academic Senate of CUS Fullerton. He has taught about 10,000 college and university students over 49 years.

Dr. Bedell spoke about the OC Board of Education, relating that it consists of five lay members who represent the five trustee areas of the county. It’s executive officer and secretary is the County superintendent of Schools is elected every four years by the people. Dr. Bedell’s district consists of Fullerton, Buena Park, Anaheim, Placentia and La Habra.

Some interesting facts include, 45% of students in Orange receive free meals while 90 percent of students in Santa Ana receive free meals. Of 7000 students. 1700 are home-schooled, mostly because the parents desire to have more influence on curriculum. Also, some students are involved with Hollywood or Hockey. Other students just aren’t successful in the normal school environment frequently a result of a difficult home life..

There are 90,000 employees in the districts with 1300 part time and 1000 hourly. All pubic teachers are fully credential. Schools are a preferred alternative to incarceration, particularly if they are able to earn a diploma and they are generally less likely to get in trouble with the law.

The budget is $280 million which is in line with most public schools. The federal government mandates instruction of special students and is supposed to pay 40% and the local districts must pay the difference.

Agendas and summaries of the Board’s actions amy be obtained at www.ocde.us. The public may address the Board of Education within the subject matter jurisdiction.
