Bill McGarvey, Jr
1921-2015
William “Bill” J. McGarvey, Jr., died quietly at his home early Thursday morning, May 14, surrounded by family. The long-time Fullerton resident and community leader was 93. Memorial services for McGarvey are pending.

McGarvey was President of our Rotary Club 1964-1965, a Rotarian since 1959, president of the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce in 1963, and over his many years of involvement in Fullerton, he spread goodwill across numerous community activities and organizations. He generously provided funding to establish the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Foundation, and has contributed to programs by providing seed money for scholarships for numerous organizations throughout Fullerton. McGarvey delighted in watching others succeed, and strove to help out the citizens of the Fullerton community.

The Fullerton Chamber of Commerce designated McGarvey as an Honorary Lifetime Member in 2008, an honor only bestowed upon 3 people. “Mr. Fullerton,” as some called McGarvey, had said he was humbled and honored by the lifetime membership.

McGarvey began his real estate career at Chapman Avenue Realty, and subsequently founded McGarvey-Thompson Realty, and McGarvey-Clark Realty (recently sold to Prudential California Realty), where it is said he elevated the image of the realtor by wearing a suit and tie (with red socks) – rather than the typical casual wear – and by consistently and expeditiously returning phone calls and steadfastly keeping appointments.

Fullerton Rotary, Boys & Girls Club, Big Brothers & Big Sister of Orange County, Fullerton District Board of Realtors, Friends of the University at California State University, Fullerton, Fullerton Police Community Council, and a host of other organizations can all count McGarvey as a past leader of the group, friend, and contributor to their successes.

McGarvey is survived by his sons Bill (Janet) and Patrick (Anna) as well as several grandchildren.;

He will be remembered as a champion for honesty, integrity, and hard work

As in past years, today’s meeting was held at the Muckenthaler Mansion on the Wednesday prior to their Annual Car Show.

After the opening traditions, guests and visitors were introduced. J Richey introduced James Ribley and Norm Kredit. Terri Grassi introduced Andy Ersek who brought some beautiful automobiles for our visual entertainment, commenting that despite rumors to the contrary, it’s not a requirement to have a red car to be included in the car show.

Announcements- President Bill Schenk started by proudly bringing back two awards (mini banners) from the most recent president’s meeting. One was for International Service in acknowledgement for the huge Fight Polio donation raised from the Jog-a thon and the other banner was for Youth Service, because of the youth involvement with the Jog-a-thon. He presented the banners to “Coach” Dan Ouweleen who has spearheaded this great event. Contrats Dan and all Rotaract and Interact members and club members who assisted with this signature event for our club!

Recognitions-Leslie McCarthy offered “fine freedom” to those who could name famous persons with the same birthdays as those birthdays and anniversaries on her list.

Birthdays this week- Birthdays included Wolf Knabe, Lynette Geiss, Bob Clark’s wife Pam, Diane Masseth-Jones’ husband Tim and finally, President William Schenk. Anniversary- Joe Lins and wife Suzy Congrats! Same date that the first merry-go-round was seen!

Leslie then offered a $2.00 special for any shameless non-Rotary promotions.

Jim Williams reminded us of the Spring Gathering event for the Boy’s and Girls Club Thursday May 13 from 5:30-8PM. Call (714) 871 1391.

Minard Duncan requested technical assistance with getting some computers running.

Ken Kaisch stood, requesting everyone’s attention… and got it… for a fleeting 15 seconds of fame! Dick Daybell proposed that Bill Schenk continue for another year as president, but too many are looking forward to Demotion Night so his motion failed. Don Ludwig announced that he was present for the first “hole in one” he had ever seen… and it was his! Griff Duncan told us of the good deal ($20.) at Plummer Auditorium May 23. There will be some great Broadway show performances at the John Raitt Awards Program. Andy Ersek invited all to the car show this weekend at the Muck! Tom Meyer proudly announced that his son will be graduating from USC Medical School and he anticipates “better than Obamacare rates” from now on!

Program-

Just as the program was starting Zoot Velasco found 20 red noses that were thought to be missing and passed them around for members to use in recognition of “Red Nose Day” that Bill Schenk announced was any day in May. There was a few minutes that most members were wearing a red nose. I’m not sure if this was a Guinness or Rotary record or not! Zoot employed his auctioneer skills to raise $397. for the benefit of the Muck programs for kids.

Zoot shared that the Muck Mansion was built on 80 acres in 1924. The Muckenthaler family founded 8 of the local cities. Muckenthaler programs served 13,000 kids at 28 different sites and next year will expand to 70 sites! The Muck serves 45,000 patrons/year and has a budget of 1.2 million. One-third of income is from weddings. Zoot was excited about their expansion of the STEM concept to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathmatics) and started with an animation program for 8th graders and will be getting into tectonic plate theory. Some programs and displays are a result of the sister city relationships. Zoot concluded with an accouncement of a new entertainment opportunity for those attending the car show this weekend…. A Russian female Rock a Billy Band!
