Bill Schenk banged the starting bell loudly and asked Capt. Dick Daybell to do the flag salute. Bob Hathaway gave a very thoughtful invocation and Theresa Harvey and Don Ludwig coordinated on “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” and the Rotary “Smile” song.
David Slomovic was recognized for completing all of the conditions for becoming a regular Fullerton Rotary member. Bill Schenk tore off the Newest Nine ribbon from his badge and welcomed David into full membership.
Bill Schenk attempted to auction off four tickets costing $50.00 per for the “Sideshows” play at Plummer. These were donated by Mike Cochran. Zoot Velasco took over as auctioneer and received a winning bid of $85 from Franki Berry. A real deal!
Winners of the best athlete of the recent Rotary high school track meet and their coaches were introduced. Fullerton Union HS coach Craig Nordstrom thanked Fullerton Rotary for sponsoring this event for the last 24 years. The FUHS top athletes of the event were Ceili Tuttle and Dylan Nicholson. For Troy HS, Coach Thomas Bacerd thanked Rotary and introduced his top athletes, Baily Zuker and Ryan Scotti. For Sunny Hills HS, Coach Chris Blume again thanked Rotary and introduced top athletes Kendra Corey and Anthony Minton. Several event times were matched or broken. This Rotary event for the Fullerton City championship has been a prestige HS track event for the last 24 years. Great Rotary thanks to Jim Thompson who started this event 24 years ago.
Another triumph for Rotary sponsored youth was an Ethics speech contest. Our local Cal State University Fullerton team of Veronica, Christian and David, wearing their impressive medals, plus another member who came late, were the winners of the event. Zoot Velasco was the coach of the contestants. Zoot attempted to recognize the schools CSUF beat by having graduates of USC, UCLA, CSLB, LMM and other local schools stand for a proper shaming. A totally improper yell by Jay Kremer asked about the CSUF football team. Perhaps someday CSUF will again have a team to use their football stadium.
It is impressive that Fullerton Rotary can assist our competent and intelligent local youth to compete and win in athletic and collegiate skills events.
Dan Ouweleen announced that the next Jog-A-Thon will be on October 24. This event has been more and more successful each year giving significant funds to both the local high school clubs as well as Rotary. Dan needs about another 10+ Rotarians to help in this event this year. Please contact Dan if you are willing to help.
Diane Masseth-Jones, the leader of our local YWCA, reported that her organization had been awarded a national honor as the charity performing the most effective philanthropic work. A flyer describing the work of the North Orange Co. YWCA was passed out that described their impressive programs.
Larry Bennett announced that the annual Rotary Cares event will be held on June 20 at the Richmond School. This event provides free care to persons in the area for physical exams, dental work, vision screening and mammograms. Larry mentioned how a woman thanked him for saving her life as a result of the exam at a Rotary Cares event. Larry asked that Fullerton Rotarians schedule their times to help at this event on June 20 beginning at 7:00am through about 2:00pm.
Miko Krisvoy requested help at the Top 100 Dinner for Sunny Hills High School this next Thursday, April 23, at the Fullerton Community Center. The event needs help from 4:00 to 8:30 pm for setup, serving and clean-up. The top 100 students from SHHS and their families will be honored.
Rotary Treasurer Bob Muschek said the quarterly bills have been e-mailed and will be snail mailed shortly. He requested a timely payment so that the good work of the club can be continued.
Minard Duncan announced that the Museum of Teaching and Learning Organization will be having an event soon. The time and place were a little garbled. If you wish to attend and support this organization that is attempting to codify the work of teachers over the years, please contact Minard Duncan.
Bill Schenk ran the opportunity drawing and no one had the winning number but Ray Hansen had a number close to that number so was declared the winner. To win, Ray was asked “What was the name of a street in New Orleans honoring Robert Jahncke’s father,” who was a prominent local Citizen. Ray missed the street name of Jahncke so the pot of $22.00 rolls over to next week.
Zoot Velasco was Recognition Master but got off to a bad start as he was in the wrong week of events. Minard Duncan was recognized for his one year anniversary, Debra Sanchez for 31 years of marriage and being married to a police chief, Mark McGee for his 54th birthday and Bill Schenk for a spousal birthday.
The program today was a craft talk by new member Brett Ackerman. He stated that he is the son of Dick Ackerman, a long time state representative of the area. Brett’s talk concentrated on his schooling at St. Juliana’s, Sunny Hills HS (better soccer team) where he had to study the Portuguese language to get admitted, Baylor University (in middle of ghetto) and San Diego State where he received a BS in Psychology. After that, he decided to go to work rather than obtain a master’s degree as a doctorate was needed to work effectively in psychology.
He worked at several jobs from political field representative to telephone sales rep. but spent 10 years as a banker at Wells Fargo. After Wells Fargo, he worked several years at Fullerton Community Bank and commended the managers there as being very knowledgeable and friendly. Currently, Brett is the leader of the Fullerton Boys and Girls Club where he is doing an effective job.
