The meeting was called to order by President,
Bill Schenk, at 12:25 p.m.
John Mark Geiss, one of our Newest Nine, presented a thought provoking invocation.
The flag salute was led by Jeff Hutchinson
Griff Duncan led the group in a robust rendition of “America” (My Country Tis of Thee) followed by SMILE!
Visitors and guests were introduced by Theresa Harvey. Griff Duncan was responsible for all guests including wife, Jan Duncan; daughter, Marilyn Ginnetti, Laura Dean Richardson, and Jo Ann Matsuba. Visiting Rotarians included a representative from RYPEN, Mawulee Ajasu.
President Schenk made several very special presentations including Rotarian of the Month for February. Honored by this distinction was Michael Cochran of the Newest Nine. He was presented a Rotarian of the Month pin and a “Free” dessert!
A second presentation was made for exemplifying Service Above Self and providing moral support to the President. This award was given to Bob Radde. Bob received a custom made cane inlaid with a Rotary Emblem and “Service Above Self”.
Zoot announced that Monette, his wife, has found a donor for a kidney transplant. Good news for Mary Burbank who had offered to be a donor. He’ll be saved for the next cause.
Rick Crane reminded club members that the City Championship Track Meet is this Saturday. Troy, Sunny Hills, and Fullerton High Schools will be at Troy High School for the competition beginning at 8 a.m.
Greg Hickman gave a shameful plug for his community breakfast with Rex Hudler to be held on Saturday, April 11, 2015, at 10 a.m. at the Christian Life Center. Tickets $10. See Greg for more information.
Bob Muschek thanked the club for their support of the Warrior Foundation. Funds raised will be put to a good cause.
Top 100 dinners are just around the corner. Miko Krisvoy announced that volunteers are needed on April 24 for Sunny Hills High School banquet and on April 29 for Fullerton High School event.
Fellowship luncheons will start soon. Sandy Hayes is coordinating these activities and will be in touch with participants soon.
The fundraising concert is on Saturday March 21. Please pick up your tickets from Winston Creel. Members will be billed for two tickets whether or not they attend. Sponsorships are also available.
The Raffle brought Jay Kremer into the spotlight. Unfortunately his good luck did not continue and he was turned away empty handed.
Recognition Master, Winston Creel, acknowledged birthdays for Carol Danforth Futterer, Brett Ackerman, Maryalyce Jeramiah, Drew Napolin and Vimal Seth. Bob Radde was recognized for both his birthday and that of his wife, Gloria.
Other honors included Joe Lins, who recently received a lifetime achievement award from Century 21. The Bartlet 2100 Cup is presented for ethical business practices and community involvement. Well deserved, Joe!
Bill Mathy and Zoot were fined for riding motorized bicycles rather than getting proper exercise.
Griff Duncan introduced his daughter, Dr. Laura Duncan for the program. Dr. Duncan, who works with homeless and veterans through her company Ascencia in Glendale, CA, spoke of homelessness, the causes of homelessness and the impact on veterans. She noted that 40% of homeless are veterans,36% are families with children. She noted that 44% of homeless are employed or worked a month prior to their homelessness; 100% of homeless have had dramatic situations in their lives.
She spoke of programs available in California, which has one of the highest percentages of homelessness in the U.S. Outlined were supportive services available which can assist with individuals impacted by homelessness.
A Rotarian in Glendale, Laura received a Rotary Token from President Schenk together with a big thanks for her program.
