Volume 74 Issue 30 Rota-Scribe: Joe Arnold

Bill Schenk brought the meeting to order at 12:30. He indicated that since we had a very full agenda today with our annual Speech Contest, the order of the meeting would be a little different. Dick Matthewson provided us with an excellent invocation. Bill Goetsch led us in the Pledge.

Cathy Gach then introduced Joanne Lee (Sunny Hills High School), the first of our six speakers from Sunny Hills and Fullerton Union high schools. Her theme was that of all the speeches for today-- this year’s Rotary motto, “Light Up Rotary.”

Following Joanne’s speech Bill Schenk noted that we did not have any visiting Rotarians with us or guests, and then presented Bob Satler with his 3rd level Paul Harris badge.

This recognition was then followed by the speech by Paulo Flores (Sunny Hills High School). Susan Smith then led the club in the singing of “Let Me Call You Sweetheart.” Our third speaker of the day was Fernando Rojas (Fullerton Union High School). His speech was followed by Susan Smith leading us in our traditional singing of “Smile.” Our fourth speaker of the day was Baylee Rogers (Fullerton Union High School).

Our President then conducted the raffle, which was won by Dick Daybell. Dick donated his $86.00 prize to Rotaract. Dick Matthewson then announced that there were vacancies for reading tutors and encouraged the membership to consider joining. Verne Andrews once again asked the members to fill out the blue sheets for nominations for Rotary grants. Rick Crane announced the track meet that will be held on March 7, and Thad Sanford indicated that there still was a need for applications for the Rotary scholarship given to graduate students studying a abroad.

Our fifth speaker of the day was Maggie Skafianakis (Fullerton Union High School) who was followed by our final speaker, Zara Sandhu (Sunny Hills High School). Bill Schenk then announced that there would be a District event at the Carpenter Center the week before our club’s Collage Concert fund-raiser. The District event will include a concert by David Sanborn. Joe Arnold (with noble assistance from Jim Williams) reminded the club of the date of our fund-raiser and urged the membership to consider being sponsors. The organizations we are currently focusing on raising funds for are the Crittenton Services for Children and Families, All the Arts for All the Kids and the Scholarship Fund of the School of Music at CSUF.

The Recognition Master for today was Bob Clark. Those recognized included Joe Arnold on his 46th wedding anniversary, Lee Brockett on the occasion of his wife Marion’s birthday, Carl Camp on the occasion of his wife Judy’s birthday, Louis Kuntz on his 58th wedding anniversary, Dan Kiernan on his wife Ann’s birthday, John Derry on his anniversary, and Kathleen Schneider on her husband’s birthday. Joe Lins was recognized for being named Volunteer of the Month by the Fullerton City Council, and Dan Ouleween was fined in advance for missing the August 16 meeting due to marriage. Various members than failed to know this was the anniversary of the founding of Reader’s Digest, no one knowing that a nuclear bomb was lost off the coast of Savannah, Georgia, on this date in 1958, an notably Ken Kaisch did not know this was the anniversary of the largest Jello mold in history (5,000 gallons) made with watermelon flavored Jello.

The President then presented certificates to each of our speakers along with a “Light Up Rotary” badge. Certificates were distributed to the timekeepers and judges: Warren Wimer, Minard Duncan, Bill Goetsch, Lee Brockett, Mike Cochran and Pat McKinley. The winners of the Speech Contest were announced: 3rd Place—Fernando Rojas, 2nd Place—Maggie Skafianakis, and 1st Place—Joanne Lee. The Principals and Speech Advisors for the two high schools were also recognized.

The meeting concluded with J. Richey leading us in the 4-Way Test.
