An inspiriting invocation was given by Bob Muschek followed by a flag salute by Bob Hathaway (where was the flag). Randy McFarland led the singing with “It’s a Grand Old Flag.” In this song Randy spent much time trying to replace a portion of the piano that he had broken loose. However, in a spirited rendition of “Smiles” both Randy and piano player Don Ludwig got all Rotarians enthusiastically involved. A minor failure of the micro-phones was rapidly cleared by our in-house expert Bill Mathy.
Bill Schenk welcomed Joy Carroll, the Chair of RYPEN, our local young professionals Rotary wing. Keith Mills and his wife Ann, Bill Peloquin and his wife Wilma, Jim Vandenburg and Jay Lieberman the local District supervisor.
Scott Dowds and Lee Brockett announced that the Fullerton Rotary officers for next year have been selected and they have agreed to serve. Their names will be given soon in the Rotagram.
Bill Schenk mentioned several opportunities for members to donate to very worthwhile causes such as the International Rotary Fund, The Paul Harris Society (for $1000/year), the Fullerton Rotary Foundation, and of course, the Stop Polio Now fund. See FOUNDATION LETTER attached.
Scott Dowds recognized several members, Dan Kiernan for winning a prestigious award for his work with the Fullerton Boys and Girls Club, Dwayne Greenleaf for no flag at the podium and anniversaries for Bob Pletka, Tom Meyer (resident sports expert), Vimal Seth and Vern Andrews. Scott Dowds complained that the Wisconsin football team (Andrews school?) is on his television every Saturday. Please note that frequent TV appearances by teams from Wisconsin, Notre Dame and Penn State are all schools that were beaten this year by Northwestern (this is for alumni Bob Maxwell and Jay Kremer). Jim Williams thanked Jim Vandenberg for bringing him into Fullerton Rotary 37 years ago. Scott Dowds continued to recognize Meg Crider for her excellent work with the recent STEM conference, Joe Lins for his continued work to help support local non-profit agencies and Ken Kaisch for not wearing his red nose and maintaining his cool to respect the visit of Jim Paddock.
In announcements, Dick Mathewson asked that members who use cereal for breakfast buy Kelloggs Frosted Flakes and save the book coupon on the box so books can be furnished for Raymond School students. Terri Grassi said that the tickets for the Deck the Halls Concert at CSUF on 12/13 are going quickly. Anyone wishing to attend needs to contact Terri ASAP. There is also an after the event, event at Terri Grassi’s and Judy Atwell’s homes on Twilight, in Fullerton.
Judy Atwell reminded members of the annual Christmas party for nursing home persons on December 17. The meeting will be at the large room at the Sunnycrest Nursing Home at 1925 Sunnycrest due to the closing of the Ebell Club. Pastor Gregg Hickman invited all to his church’s pre-Thanksgiving meeting on the Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving. Dan Ouweleen again thanked all committee members for their work on both the Jog-A-Thon and the STEM conference.
At raffle or opportunity drawing time, winner Bill Hite was asked by Bill Schenk to pick out a red chip from the bag containing one red chip and 14 other chips. Bill Hite promptly picked out a red chip but the rules of the game were promptly revised by Bill Schenk to change the winning chip to a blue chip. This change was greeted by a full round of boos from the audience. Apparently Bill Schenk has eye as well as ear challenges.
District President Jim Paddock gave an inspiring talk about his walk through Rotary and described when he fully became a Rotarian. He fully realized the impact of Rotary after a visit to Mexico to construct a small home for a family of five persons who were currently living in basically a lean-to. This small structure about the size of a two car garage was gratefully received by the family. Paddock reviewed several projects done by Rotary International and commended Fullerton Rotary for its multiple efforts in the Fullerton area. Paddock recommended that local Rotarians turn out for the upcoming visit to this area by International President Gary C.K. Huang on December 28. Paddock stated that an International Rotary goal is to finally end Polio in the world by the 2018 year. Next year the annual District conference will be on Catalina on May 1-3. He recommended that many members attend.
