Program

Jim Williams, introduced the first half of the program, a DVD record of the remarkable life accomplishments of Past Prez Ray Hansen. He personally recruited over 50 members. Born in China to missionaries Ray was on the last train out of town before Japanese invasion when he was 7 years old. In the U.S. Army at the conclusion of WW II, Ray was assigned to an Intel unit that supported the prosecutions of Nazi war criminals and got to play with a lot of their stuff. He attended several undergraduate programs and completed graduate work at USC. Ray had initial interest as a History/Government major with teaching in mind, but then decided to attend Whittier College to lfocus on becoming a YMCA Director. Ray met Nancy in 1955 in a deli, and wed in ’56. After a twenty six year career with the YMCA, including obtaining a $500,000 donation to the Anaheim Family YMCA, Ray embarked upon a career as a fund raising dynamo. He raised big bucks for the construction of the Crystal Cathederal and many other major fund raising efforts for Goodwill and St. Jude Hospital building fund. Again retiring at age 80, Nancy got him out of the house to raise funds for Boys & Girls Club of Fullerton and to act as a docent for the Nixon Library since 1997. Ray has been a Rotarian since 1957 and is a person that is a walking example of the highest Rotarian ideals.

Ray’s craft DVD was followed by Kevin Choi. Born in South Korea in 1974. As a youth in Korea into Jr. High School, Kevin lived with uncle. He majored in the important stuff: sports and earning cash by delivering newpapers. In the morning it was deliver papers, in the afternoon it was Varsity field hockey, then off to martial arts practice. Studies were at the bottom of the priority list. As a young teen, his dad finally asked for transcript and after a review, Kevin got a big time “ass whooping”. Followed by another when dad found out Kevin was on field hockey team courtesy of a forged signature of his father. Kevin always had work as a first priority, even after age 16 when he arrived in the United States. Had to work to go to college, so he worked as security guard. Predictably Kevin had more interest in security business than in college and he went on to build the business to more 150 employees covering Southern California. Early on, Kevin has also recognized that he has a second, even more important job – serving God. Heavily involved in Grace Church, serves as a youth leader. Sponsored into Rotary by Daniel Kang. He is active in supporting Christian businesses in seven countries. Kevin has two sons, Noah and Isaiah. Although Kevin was a reluctant applicant to Rotary, he followed the direction of Daniel Kang to join The Rotary Club of Fullerton. At first did not understand why he was instructed to join our Club, but over the past two years Kevin has gained much insight and good feeling from attending and learning about serving the community and being with good people. Kevin summed by his talk by his observation that valuable friendships and character are being passed on through the generations by the values embodied in The Rotary Club of Fullerton.
