The meeting was opened by President Lee Brockett with the invocation given by Pastor Greg Hickman. Greg gave thanks to the Lord for the multiple blessings we enjoy as Americans and Rotarians. Jim Blake led the pledge of allegiance to the flag of our great country. Nissa Newton and Bob Muschek led us in “My Country Tis’ of Thee and “Smiles.” Nissa was observant and dropped a key in pitch with “My Country Tis’ of Thee” and had some positive effect on the singing of this song. For “Smiles”, the Rotarian singing got away from any leadership but the handshaking was spirited.
Ken Kaisch introduced visitors and visiting Rotarians. There was only one visitor, Lynn Fulton, a guest of Diane Masseth-Jones and no visiting Rotarians.
Zoot Velasco led the opportunity drawing with his usual card trick so Bill Hite drew the Queen of Hearts and not the winning Joker card. Per Zoot Velasco there are only 12 cards left in the deck so buy tickets next week as the chance of success is greater, (unless Zoot hides the Joker)

Highly acclaimed Recognition Master, Joyce Capelle was as usual pertinent and entertaining. Recognized were Ken Kaisch on general principles, Cathy Gach for the birthday of her spouse Donald, Gregg Hickman for his 60th and special birthday and Franki Berry for her admitted “big one” which Joyce Capelle determined was the 39th. Gregg Hickman and his family are being treated by his church to several days of vacation in New York City including trips to many tourist spots. Joyce recognized three for their anniversary of joining the Fullerton Rotary Club, Will Abbott, 1-year; Bill Hite, 13 years and Pat McKinley 17 years. Joyce Capelle also recognized Zoot Velasco for the origination of Quinicintera events for young Hispanic girls who do not have a family to help with this special coming of age event. Prior to ending the recognition event, Joyce Capelle demanded her due as Queen of Recognition to a kiss of her ring finger from Bernie Dunlap, which Bernie dutifully performed.

In announcements, Treasurer Bob Muschek, announced that he has special green envelopes available for those members who can’t find an envelope to send in their Rotary dues and luncheon fees. Kim Barlow has tee shirts recognizing Rotary South’s Uncorked Event that are on sale for $15. Maryalyce Jeremiah requested Rotarians to attend the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast on Friday, October 18 at Hope International University. Maryalyce will be the MC of the event. Terri Prado, Diane Masseth-Jones and her guest Lynn Fulton presented pink flamingos used to “flock” the yards of homes to encourage owners to make significant donations to the Breast Cancer Awareness effort. Vern Andrews again requested suggestions for the Community Development Award annually given by the club. The club has about $10,000 this year that can be awarded to a local worthy cause.
The program speaker was Debra Drysdale who spoke on and admitted to having the illness known as HHT. Debra spelled this out for me as it is Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiltasia. This is an hereditary disease that results in spontaneous bleeding from one or more body parts. The most common evidence of this is frequent nose bleeds. The cause is imperfect capillary vessels that carry blood from high pressure arteries from the heart to the low pressure veins returning blood to the heart. The blood by-passes these capillaries to create high blood pressure in veins, causing vein leakage or bleeding. The leakage or bleeding may be in the brain, kidneys, liver and other critical body parts. Many deaths have been attributed to poor knowledge of this disease by the public as well as medical professionals. It is important to have a person tested for HTH, if there is any suspicion of the disease so proper treatment may be provided. An appeal for funds for supporting HTH research was made by the speaker. Bill Kilinghoffer, who has some family involvement with HTH, agreed to donate $5,000 to this effort.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you don’t care who gets the credit for it. Anonymous
The world cares very little about what a man or woman knows; it is what a man or woman is able to do that counts.
