Volume 72 Issue 5 Rota-Scribe: Bill Schenk

Prez Allyn asked Ray Hansen to name the basic tenant of Rotary and Ray immediately answered “Service Above Self”. As if Allyn needed a better closing thought he reflected on today’s program an included “A keen observer knows that silence is golden” and with that he closed today’s meeting.

Our very special guest speaker today was the Honorable Ed Royce, U.S. Representative who represents Fullerton and the 40th District and is serving his tenth term.

Congressman Royce, having previously greeted members of our club, gave an informal, if not passionate speech about the diminishing manufacturing ability in America. Mr. Royce laid the most blame on our high energy costs and explained why they are so high and what the Legislative and Executive branches of our government need to do to overcome this problem. His explanation also touched upon Medicare, Social Security, un-employment and education. Those present felt his speech was very informative although no one was smiling at the end. A question and answer segment let some of our members ask specific question and Congressman Ed gave very direct answers.

Continuing our backwards meeting;

Lee Brockett selected the Jack of Hearts and now there are only 12 cards left in our Opportunity drawing and the pot continues to grow.

8/15 Jay Johnstone, Angels Baseball
8/22 At Morningside Retirement Community
(An Offsite Meeting)

Coach Dan O was ultimately dissuaded from leading calisthenics to whip us into better shape. He settled on urging us to commit to making the up-coming Jog-a-thon biggest one ever on September 29th. He needs us to suggest local sponsors that he will contact to participate.

Baseball slugger Pat Hartnett pinch-hit for Marty Burbank and announced the September 8 Angel event to End-Polio-Now. This is more than an Angel game. There are pre-game festivities that allow for Rotary Fellowship in the parking lot.

Treasurer Bob Muschek hobbled to the announcement podium and reminded us all to double check to make sure we’ve paid our dues. Invoices were sent by e-mail and not by US Post Office and some us neglected to remit.

Dan Fisk introduced visiting Rotarians and Guest that included: Boy Scout Girl and former Fullerton Rotarian Julie Anderson (now a member of Orange Rotary); Julie brought a guest Will Abbott; Bob Muschek introduced his wife and driver Doris; Dick Daybell introduced his wife Lois; and Ray Hansen introduced his friend Eric Jones.

Nissa Foster led us in singing Smile preceded by America the Beautiful.

Mike Oates gave the invocation.

And finally Mike Reynolds led the pledge.

Prez Allyn opened the meeting at 12:30

Proposed new Mmber: Will Abbot, Boy Scouts of America
