Jim Kempton, former editor of Surfer Magazine, Marketing director for TransWorld Publishing and Director of the Quicksilver Crossing as well as President of the San Clemente Historical Society and Media Director for Billabong, was introduced as our speaker. Kempton has written hundreds of articles on surfing including the definitive history of the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association. Recently wroteSurfing the Manual a book on the history of surfing through the performance techniques of the worlds best surfers.
Kempton spoke of Surfing and its impact on business and how the surfing industry changed business. Surfers live by the numbers, he explained. Surfers rely on calculating the numbers in sets and the distance between the sets. He referred to Toffler’s Future Shock – “Surfing is a signpost pointing toward the future…. In the future people will communicate through their common interests.”
According to Kempton, the surfing solidified the importance and power of the logo. People don’t buy things, they buy identity. He continued by drawing many analogies between business and surfing and its application to marketing. Three principals that apply to both: Judgment, Balance, Positioning, Passion. Both business and surfing are based upon what you are trying to accomplish and you have to react to conditions presented you.
Go out and find your wave.
