Opening Stuff
Prez J opened the meeting promptly at 12:27; with the invocation ably handled by Chief Pat, followed by the pledge of allegiance, led by Duane Greenleaf. Song leader Grif Duncan coaxed a decent harmonic version of the Battle Hymn of the Republic out of us, followed by a gusty rendition of Smile.
Introductions by Bob Radde, who hosted guest Rick Jones We had one guest Rotarian, Debra Marks, Yorba Linda Sunrise; Jim Williams had guests Harold Benash & Donna Johnson; Scott Douds guest was Matt Appodaca; Diane Masseth-Jones guest was John of Meyer Printing; Dan Ouweleen, hosted Management Consultant Mark Wiener while Nissa Foster brought 3 guests, Fullerton College Engineering students David Salizar, Derek Mardian and Jordan Tran who are leaving soon for a science competition at the Manned Spacecraft Center, Houst; Ken Kaisch had four charming guests who discreetly stayed out of sight and spoke nary a word. Jim Young introduced Bob Pollard, CSUF Librarian and Dick Mathewson hosted Yolanda McComb, Sue Hull and Pam Clark as part of the “Reading by Nine” project.
Quiz Question
The “winning” raffle ticket was held by Griff who answered part 1 of Zoot’s 2 part current events question correctly as Aflac but he blanked on Gilbert Godfrey as the 2nd part. Good try Griff.
Announcements
Leslie McCarthy – Top 100 banquets, really really appreciates sign ups – must have 30 volunteers to set up, serve and clean up. The pros are going to cook. Vern Andrews announced a Community Investment Awards gift to pay for games at the Independence Park temporary location and presented a check to the Fullerton Boys & Girls Club; Jim Williams presented a check to Southern California Railway Association, to Harold for the poster contest safety program. 17 schools participate in contest for safety poster design. The entries will be displayed at Fullerton Public Library.
Dr. Jim Young presented awards to PHF Bill Goestch + 2, PHF Cathy Gach + 6, PHF Bill Klinghoffer + 5 --- Paul Harris awards. Jim also reminded us of our major sponsorship of the largest meeting room at the CSUF library. CSUF (Bob Pollard) accepted a check for $5,000 to add to the endowment at CSUF from our local Foundation. Bob Pollard said the income from the gift will be used for outreach to community in perpetuity.
Dick Mathewson, Chair of the “Reading by Nine” Committee reported that 27 kids directly were helped by direct participation of members Bill Hite, Judy Atwell, Joe Lins for Stephanie, Bernie Dunlop, Jay Kraemer, Pam for Bob Clark, Bob Radde, Maryalice Jeremiah who completed a 20 week program of reading with the students. Special thanks also went to Jim Williams, Gloria Kraemer, and [Sorry whoever you are – missed it] for jumping in on short notice to cover absences. As a participation thank you – Dick handed out pencils and pens. Yolanda McComb and Sue Hull from Raymond School expressed their gratitude for the program and hope it will continue next year. Great hands on project Dick.

Recognition Master of the Day, Warren Wimer, had a “FINE” day, starting off leading the assembled Rotarians with the birthday song led by Grif honoring Nate Kvetny, John Phelps and Prez J for their birthdays today, April 27th. J Richey got a double dose, as his anniversary is also within the week, on May 3rd. Other birthdays and anniversaries recognized were Travis Norton, Clare McKenna, Pat Geary, Ted Kim and Pat Tormey for birthdays; Don Bankhead and Chuck Munson for anniversaries and Derek Johnson and Carolyn Tormey for spousal birthday reminders. Jim Williams was honored as Fullerton Business Person of the Year. Theresa Harvey was pleased to pay his recognition fee. Next was the annual “Brag Day” where many members had the opportunity to share justifiable pride in the accomplishments of those near and dear to them for a small philanthropic donation.
