Volume 69, Issue 1 Rota-Scribe: Minard Duncan

The meeting began with a spectacular entrance by our new president and his entourage. Prez Jeff Hutchison was wheeled in on a tow motor to the music of the “Rocky Theme” and “If I had  Hammer.” He was followed by his union workers also donning hard hats. The tool man Prez, wearing hard hat and a tool belt, told us he did not have the clout of a police chief but he did brandish a hammer to show off his authority.

After the fines were levied, Bob Savage presented Pat McKinley with the coveted City of Fullerton Maintenance patch and cup. Fire Chief Wolf Knabe presented Pat with the coveted Fire Department patch and cup, and mentioned that Pat and he have a lot in common. They both wanted to grow up and be firemen. We got a frown from the Ex-Chief.

Warren Wimer had the winning ticket and chose Jay Kremer to help. Fred Johnson wanted them to name the song and singers of the selection. They got the name of “Love Potion #9” but did not get the Clovers as the singing group.

While waiting for the speaker of the day to arrive, Randy McFarland attempted to tell his favorite jokes. That did not go over very well so he asked members to tell about some of the first days of new presidents of our club. Some really fun entrances were described - including one prez that arrived in a helicopter.

Program:

Jay Kremer came through for us since our speaker did not make it to the meeting. He did warn us that he was not going to talk about drugs and our failure to win the battle. He told us some entertaining stories that happened when he worked for the Los Angeles Sanitation Department. He worked a lot with Waste Water and Environmental Programs. At one time, he was sent to build a water treatment plant on the outskirts of L.A. County. One program was named the Los Angeles LUST Program - an acronymn for Leaking Underground Storage Tank Program. That name did not last very long before they had to change it to something less controversial.

President Jeff earned the distinction of being the first president in The Rotary Club of Fullerton whose program speaker did not show up on his first day as president.

He also informed us that the meeting goes a lot longer when he has to sit on the presidents side of the table.

Jeff closed with, “There are many ways to measure success - not the least is how your child describes you.”

Good luck, Jeff! We enjoyed your first meeting!

If anyone would like to be a backup speaker for Rotary when a
scheduled speaker does not show up, please contact Deborah Sanchez.
Craft Talks are always good. Other ideas will be readily appreciated.
