Volume 66, Issue 31 Rota-Scribe: Greg Hickman

Our President Terri opened our meeting this week by asking Dan Fisk to lead us in the Flag Salute.  He was followed by Howard Wood who lead the Fullerton Rotary in a wonderful rendition of "I Want A Girl Just Like The Girl” (in honor of Valentine’s Day) and, of course, our joyful standard, "Smile."  Howard Wood did an outstanding job-as always! Pastor Gregory Hickman then surprised us all with encouraging us to SING our Invocation, and we did, as he led us in “The Lord’s Prayer.”

Guests:

Guests were announced by Mr. Bob Savage, who is always a delight to listen to! Guests included: Diane Masseth-Jones’s guest, Maria Teresa Johnson who is a staff member with YWCA, Visting Rotarian, Greg Owen, as well as Robert Jahncke’s son, Rob Jahncke Jr, Ray Hansen’s guest was Deidre Kinsey. Don Dankhead’s guest was Harry Sidhu, Ray Ashcroft was kind to bring Alan Gottlieb (proposed for membership). We welcomed them all!

Announcements:

-President Terri announced a Rotary trip to Israel-all interested, please see President Terri.

-Dick Matthison gave us an update on the “Reading By 9” Program. We have donated over 900 books, and a total of over $8,600.00 given (worth 3 times that if ordered through Scholastic Book Services) It was noted that Ken Kaisch provided an EXTRA donation (Thank you, Doctor!).

-Walt Barnes provided us a Foundation update: Leroy Fulton and Bill Klinghoffer both donated $3,000.00 to the Foundation! Jay Kremer also donated $2,000.00! Great Job, men!

-Phil Silverman was honored by President Terri (and the entire Club!) for his FINE work in organizing our FINE MASTERS.

-Bob Jahncke announced the new small Rotary phone directories are available.

-Mr. Rick Crane (with that great voice!) reminded us of the ladies Basketball Game Thursday, February 8, 2007. What followed was hilarious: Coach Maryalyce Jeremiah and Tom Meyer (known to me as “The Mighty Meyer!”) ”tested” President Terri to guarantee she
was ready to Coach the team: SHE IS READY! [The “trick” question was the point value of a “3-point shot!”]

-The Fellowship Lunch schedule was passed out and highlighted by Mr. Dick Daybell. A great idea! We are encouraged to invite our own wonderful President to every lunch!

-Ray Ashcroft has a “sweet deal” for us as a fundraiser: “Singing Valentines!” by The Orange Empire Chorus from February 9-14.

Fine Master and Fines:

Rick Price was AGAIN the FINE Fine Master of the day. I say “again” because the LAST time I was the Rotascribe, it was Mr. Price at-bat. (I think I am seeing a pattern).

…Among the fines: The President of Fullerton Commercial Bank Tom (“The Mighty Meyer”) Meyer was fined way too little: He suffered for all of us at the SUPERBOWL IN A BOX SEAT!! He didn’t get rained on (that’s always good!), but he was still fined $25.00. (See? Too little!!) Tom answered several amazing questions correctly-which was impressive. Birthdays Included: Lee Brockett’s wife, Carl Camp’s wife, Jeff Hutchison answered a UCLA question to assist him in celebrating a birthday. OTHERS HONORED: Wally Bartelt (early anniversary!) and Jim Lapak.

The Raffle followed (at $140.00!) Winning ticket was #6675 and Bill Hite pulled a 6 of hearts… the Joker’s gotta be there someday!)

The consolation prize was from Mr. Lee Brockett… Thanks, sir!

PROGRAM:

Mr. Bob Larsen
(Irvine Spectrum Club)

International Service: INDIA

Dr. Bob served in Mission work in India for 6 years-no breaks-did not come home; he was a very busy man! He had 100-200 patients a day; they even had a mobile clinic to assist the people. He has returned 8 or 9 times; and … he leaves tomorrow (Thursday, February 8) for a month visit. He enjoys the villages more than the cities: the villages have a peace about them. Interesting Factoids: 1) There are essentially 2 classes of people in India: the very rich and the very poor. 2) There is a slightly growing “middle class” in some of the cities-wherever technology (i.e. computer work) is evidenced. 3) The Indians LOVE America and our ways 4) India has MORE Rotarians than any other country!

Bob shared the remarkable blessing of the matching Grant method of Rotary with a Power Point presentation entitled “Leveraging With Matching Grants.”

Questions and Answers were then addressed and taken.

President Terri thanked all the visitors and guests for joining us and gave a Closing Thought by Robert Louis Stevenson:” Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant.”
