Program: Randy McFarland introduced April Moell, Coordinator of Hospital Disaster Communication. There are several volunteers in the group whose first priority is to help hospital patients by supporting doctors and hospitals that care for them. Each volunteer is trained in amateur radio and mass casualty incidents. They have their own HAM operator I.D. number and no other person in the world can duplicate the call number. They support internal and external communication by being a back-up system in case telephone lines, satellite cell phones, walkie talkies, etc. go out in a disaster such as an earthquake, hurricane, flood, bomb or other types of disasters. They are connected with 34 hospitals in our area and are on call 24/7 and they can find patients in nearby hospitals such as they did in the Placentia train wreck in as little as 2 minutes. Since 1980, the HAM operators have been in 352 events, 94 emergencies and 71 phone failures. Doctors and other personnel in hospitals consider the communication group critical to health care.
