Volume 65, Issue 40 Rota-Scribe: Jay Kremer

Opening Ceremonies

President Joyce Capelle gave the Rotary bell a mighty whack and brought the meeting to order. Mark Zane gave the pledge to our wonderful country’s flag.

Howard Wood and Don Ludwig on the piano led Rotarians in singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” and the regular Rotary welcoming song. Singing harmony was much improved from previous weeks, as most Rotarians knew the songs well.

Leroy Fulton gave the invocation emphasizing the importance of this holy week. Thursday marks the Last Supper with Good Friday the crucifixion and Easter Sunday the rising of Christ from the dead. He commended Rotarians of all faiths to think of the blessing bestowed by God upon us.

John Phelps welcomed guests. Franki Berry’s guest was Jim Williams (not that Jim Williams). Diane Masseth-Jones brought three guests, Carla Jones, Brittan Rome and Nina Visconte who work with Diane at the YWCA. Joyce Capelle brought two guests, Jayne Millstein and Gina Brunick who work with Joyce at the Florence Crittenton Services Organization. Leslie McCarthy brought her daughter Meghan.

Program

Jeopardy Program Host Mills
Keith Mills with very able assistance from Joyce Capelle’s guests, Jayne Millstein and Gina Brunick, brought the Jeopardy game to Fullerton Main. Three contestants were recruited by President Joyce Capelle to answer questions involving Rotary and Rotarians. These reluctant volunteers were Wally Barnes, Bob Savage and Ray Hansen. The first portion of the game had questions, which involved local Fullerton Main Rotary members and details. The second portion involved national and international Rotary.
Our Jeopardy Contestants

Contestants Wally Barnes, Bob Savage and Ray Hansen had a difficult initial phase acclimating to the contest. Ray Hansen was especially challenged, frequently yelling out the right answer after another contestant had obtained the right to answer the question. This gave the other contestant the credit for the question with no credit for Ray Hansen. The contest questions were well chosen to emphasize the wide spectrum of important work done by local Rotarians. Keith Mills cautioned Rotarians in the audience to not offer answers. This was well ignored and frequently caused contestants to miss questions if they listened to the audience.

The second phase of the contest involved national and international Rotary. Again it was impressive that men like Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt were Rotarians. Also 40 Rotarians were involved in establishing the United Nations Organization in 1945 in San Francisco. As April is Rotarian Magazine month, questions on the local issue of the magazine were one of the categories.

At the end of regulation Jeopardy, the score was Bob Savage 5400, Wally Barnes 4600 and Ray Hansen 0. (Ray scored many points for other contestants prior to having his microphone taken away from him.) The final Jeopardy question involved Rotary origins and no contestant made a wager. Luckily, as no one knew the names the other three men who, with Paul Harris, started Rotary in Chicago in 1905. Our local reincarnation of Paul Harris, AKA Jim Young was asked and quickly came up with the correct three names.

The final Jeopardy score was as given above with Bob Savage winning two tickets to a Dodger’s game on July 9th, with paid parking. Consolation prizes were extra helpings of the day’s dessert of chocolate covered strawberries (left over dessert!).

Joyce Capelle’s admonition at closing from her favorite picture was “May the Force be with you.”
