Volume 65, Issue 22 Rota-Scribe: Jay Kremer

The meeting was called to order by President Joyce Capelle. Pete Magoski gave the pledge of allegiance and Howard Wood led the club in vigorously singing “God Bless America” and the Rotary welcome song. David Schoen gave an invocation of thankfulness for our country.

Diane Masseth-Jones welcomed the guests. Randy McFarland’s guest was Ken Benjamin. Diane Masseth-Jones recognized Ken as a computer supplies store-owner and gave his business a plug. Rumor has it that two printer cartridges were involved for the plug. Paul Dudley’s guest was the Head of Planning for the City of Fullerton, Joel Rosen. Leroy Fulton introduced his guest, his wife Jean

In announcements, Jim Young had visited Buck Catlin at Park Vista and said Buck was doing better and looking forward to returning to Rotary luncheons. Jim Young also announced that Jack Hayes is planning to have a heart pacemaker installed in the next few days.

Cathy Gach announced that the Fullerton High choral group was having a free Christmas caroling event at Plummer on Friday, December 9 at 7:00 PM and everyone is invited. Dick Daybell announced that he had distributed the notices for the next fellowship luncheons. Twenty-three groups of four Rotarians are requested to meet for lunch in the next 30-days. All 23 groups were also requested to invite Joyce Capelle to lunch with them.

Mark McGee reminded Rotarians that next week, December 14, is the annual Christmas Party for Seniors living at several local nursing homes. The party is at the Ebell Club at 313 Laguna Road beginning at 11:15 to 11:30. Rotarians are asked to be there at about 10:30 to assist the 60 or more  seniors, who are mainly in wheelchairs, to their table seats. Mark McGee thanked John Phelps who is again paying for the Christmas gifts that Rotary provides for these seniors.

Shine Kim, a pastor at Grace Ministries in Fullerton, invited all to a Christmas pageant celebration at Grace Ministries. Seven tableaus representing various Christmas stories will be presented beginning this weekend at the Grace Ministries site.

Walt Barnes noted that the National Rotary Director of Annual Giving has commended Fullerton Rotary for becoming a full Paul Harris donation club. Walt Barnes also gave John Derry his Paul Harris awards pins and ribbon and plaque and commended Harry Brown for a major donation to the Rotary Foundation.

Program:

Vern Andrews provided information on the Fullerton Rotary program involving donations to local schools to support their educational efforts. Several principals and teachers from local schools were at the luncheon to thank Fullerton Rotary and describe the programs supported by the donations.

Rolling Hills School principal Harriet Herman and teachers Yvette Edwards and Mary Hood said the funds allowed them to stage a patriotic song program using songs from the Revolutionary War through today. Alan Waterman of Nicolas Junior High said the funds will allow them to purchase a laser color printer for the school. As all students at Nicolas now have computers, the new printer will allow them to print their efforts in color. Waterman noted that color prints are much more impressive than just black and white prints.

Yolanda McComb and teachers Linda Kochan-Patrick and Vicki Lawhorn of Raymond School explained that their donations were used for a knowledge-expanding trip for the students including disposable cameras for keeping a trip record. Sunset Lane School principal Paula Pitluk said the Rotary funds were used to implement a computer based program to support reading skills development. Troy High School Assistant Principal Dianne Kingsland said their funds were used for a multi-media projector and for more library books.

Glenda Thompson of Maple School recognized several Rotary members such as Bill Mathy, Jim McGarvey, Mark Geiss, and Minor Duncan subjecting them to Rotary fines. Maple School Rotary funds were used to establish a luncheon program for Maple School boys involving speakers from local businesses. These speeches are designed to give male students guidance and an interest  in future careers. Glenda Thompson requested that any Rotarians wishing to give a description of their work to the students should please contact her.

Finemaster Jim Williams recognized for December birthdays Les Christensen, Cathy Gach, Diane Masseth-Jones, Jim McKamy and Ray Ashcroft. Recognized for their wife’s birthday were Don Bankhead, Bob Jahncke, Rick Price and Bernie Dunlap. Wedding anniversary recognition was given to Dave & Beverly Bates, Carl & Judy Camp, Bob and Pamela Clark Jr., Chuck and Janet Davis, Mark and Lynette Geiss and Pat and Carolyn Tormey

Club Elections:

Bob Savage conducted the election of new Rotary officers. The president-elect for 2006 is Tom Meyer and the new Rotary Board members are Minard Duncan, Bill Schenk and J. Richey. Bob Savage reported some write-in votes for Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.

Program (part 2):

Leroy Fulton gave a very interesting Senior Craft Talk. He described his life from his 1931 birth in a Kentucky coal mine area to prestigious church and educational positions as a minister of music, a preacher, a lead minister, a college president, chairman of a national church music program, a founder of two Kiwanis Clubs and in several administrative positions at the local Hope University. Leroy spent much of his working career in the states of Indiana, Florida, South Carolina and Southern California. He also has visited 44 countries in his working career. Leroy claims to be just a Kentucky hillbilly but his several significant accomplishments belie his claim.

Mike Oates closed the meeting with a funny reading of a cookie recipe involving use of copious amounts of Jack Daniels Black Label. The recipe got a little twisted after several hits on the fake Jack Daniels by Mike Oates.

Prez Joyce Capelle reminded all to come to the Ebell Club next week and to come early (11:00-11:30).
