Allan Bridgford introduced guest speaker Jim Vanderburg with as lengthy an introduction as the program itself. It was amazing to all attending to hear the history of Jim’s work in Rotary, especially by a friend and fellow Rotarian of over 50 years. Allan and Jim both graduated from Fullerton High School in 1953 and soon joined the Rotary in 1962. Jim was Brea Rotary President in 67-68. He joined the Fullerton Rotary Club in 1969. He was elected District Governor in 78-79. In 1980-81 Jim was Manager for Program Activities for Rotary International and he also served a term as Director of Rotary International. When Jim finally took the microphone (after a standing ovation from and inspired room full of Rotarians), he told a story that inspires him. Jim introduced us to Thuy Doe, a former Boat person that he and Willa had assisted 30 years ago, when she and her young family came to California after the fall of Viet Nam. Jim told of Thuy’s challenges and obstacles that she overcame to raise her family and make a living in a new land. Thuy’s son has just graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis and was congratulated personally by President George W. Bush. Her Daughter Tiffany is a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. Thuy and her daughter (who was in uniform) were there to honor Jim Vanderburg. As Jim says, Rotary has given him a lifetime opportunity to perform this years Rotary International Motto, “Service above self”. THIS WAS A TRULY INSPIRING PROGRAM!
