Raffle: Dick Glaus was asked which of the following is farthest from the equator - Tasmania, Transylvania, or Tanzania? Like the rest of us, he did not know that Transylvania was the answer. Program: Vern Andrews introduced Manager Gary Templeton from the Golden Baseball League Fullerton Flyers. Gary was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1977. He was a three time Major League All-star and the only player who got 100 hits from both sides of the plate in a season. 15 players who were on the 2002 World Series Championship Anaheim Angels played for Gary in the minors. The Golden Baseball League is an Independent League where players get a second chance. They are looking for young men who want to continue their careers in baseball. The league is also looking at Latin America and Japan for players .Many of the Golden League players go on to major league clubs as evidenced by a league up north that has signed 47 players to the pros and 30 are now on major league clubs. . The independent league is like a second scout for the majors. Interestingly, Ricky Henderson recently signed with the San Diego team, and the Flyers have 15 ex professional league players on the team. They have 8 rookies. They do drug screening and the consequence for abuse is a one year suspension. The other teams in the league are Mesa, AZ; Phoenix, AZ; Yuma, AZ; Long Beach, CA; Chico, CA; San Diego, CA; and Japan. Schedules were on the tables. Gary is looking for a championship this year and he says their strength is pitching. |
