Volume 63, Issue 45 Rota-Scribe: Leslie McCarthy

Welcome to all from President Bill. The Pledge was led by Bill Schenk and thought for the day by Al Tetreault. Paraphrased briefly it went something like this, “Enjoy your day and greet people with a smile, even if yoru day is going badly as there is always someone out there who is having a worse one than yours.

Visitors introduced by Franki Berry:

Franki opened with a letter she received from Amy Kluth who participated in a marathon on May 2nd in Canada. She completed her course in 4 hours, 4 minutes and 45 seconds. Given that most of us would have trouble getting up early enough to start the course, congratulations to our former member are certainly in order. Visiting Rotarians include Frank Stroobant from Big Bear Lake and Ron Newall from Rotary South. Guests include Michael La on his second visit and guest of Daniel Kang and Allyn Lean, Mike Oates brings us Matt Dillon a management consultant, Glenda Thompson, Principal of Maple School is a guest of Cameron McCune and Joe and Susan Lin are guests of Don Bankhead (yes Don, you do get the privilege of providing for their lunches!). Welcome to all our guests!

• Using the expert legal services of Rick Price, Marriott was able to get out of our unfavorable Demotion Night contract. Warren Wimer, Esquire was able to trick the 4 Points into signing the same unfavorable contract on our behalf for the move of Demotion Night to their facility on 6/30/04. (4 Points did try to retain his services for their side, but couldn’t afford his retainer. I think all we had to do was make him fine free for a year. What a bargain!) Please indicate your expected attendance on the sign-up sheets at your table.

Recognition and Fines by Jim McKamy:

Jim opened with a favorite joke, “What has 18 legs and catches flies?”. Don’t worry, Jim Blackburn will be taking the finemaster’s chair next week. Recognized were Les Christensen who celebrated his anniversary by watching the 8:00 movie of the week and paid a $16 fine for the privilege, Bernie Dunlap who turned 61 this week and Jeff Hutchison who is now officially eligible to join AARP. Also, Drew Napolin celebrates 21 happy years with his wife and Frank Kawase was assigned a $40 reminder fee for his wife Joan.

Raffle

The raffle question was another sports one (groan!). Who pitched the most recent perfect game and how old was he? The answer was not correctly guessed and 10 hours of free AOL and $10 was the consolation prize. The answer to the question, Randy Johnson who was 40 at the time and a lefty. My question, what team was he pitching for?

A master plan for growth over the next 20 years had to be implemented. It needed to encompass growth, competing demands for space and entitlements. Using existing resources they want to add 400,000 new square feet to the college, 3,000 new parking spaces and add more college community gathering spots. They would like to add capacity for 25,000 new students without adding land. To do so many options are being explored including closing some streets through the campus, increasing presence in El Toro (currently they are educating 3-4,000 students in a leased building), and providing subsidized faculty housing in partnership with the Elks Lodge. No thought now is being endorsed to use the Fullerton Arboretum land in the development of the college.

Thank you Jim and Jay for the update on CSUF!

P.S. The parking structure being constructed now will be completed by September.

Meeting was adjourned by President Bill.
