The meeting begins

Heels clicking higher than ever with the approach of Demotion Night, President Bob Savage asked Leroy Fulton to begin the meeting by leading us in the Pledge to our flag, which was NOT still there this week… so everyone turned to face a virtual flag that everyone believed to be outside the room somewhere on campus.

Griff Duncan animatedly led our singers (Ray Ashcroft, Bill Peloquin, Howard Wood, Ron Soderquist and LeRoy Fulton) in “America the Beautiful” and “Smile” with Don Ludwig on piano.

Thought of the Day was offered by Past President Ray Ashcroft who explained that a trade of favors with Pat McKinley was why he was standing there this day. Reflecting on the success of the Sunny Hills High School Top 100 dinner , Ray shared that Past President Walt Prey started the Top 100 Dinner tradition 45 years ago and that Past President Jim Thompson worked tirelessly all day, organizing and doing whatever what was needed. Amazingly, throughout these opening festivities, the entire group was already in position for the lunch lines, so lunch was enjoyed!

Called to Order

Welcome to visiting Rotarians and guests

The prez asked Past President Bob Jahncke to oversee our visitors which he did, starting with Bernie Lake of Lynwood Rotary. Maryalyce Jeremiah introduced Dr. June Kearney, her first basketball coach, and currently a school colleague, June who acts as a liaison between the NCAA and Cal State Fullerton, assuring rules from the thick rulebook are being followed. Carolyn Tormey introduced Chuck Davis, who announced that he turned his paperwork in for joining our Rotary club. Rick Crane introduced Theresa Harvey of the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce. Diane Masseth-Jones introduced Nancy Lee who will be organizing a show about Vietnam life at the Muckenthaler in April of next year.

Announcements

Bill Peloquin reminded us that there’s still time to sign up for the District Conference at $100. each.

June 1st meeting will be at Grace Ministries at Brookhurst and Valencia.

Judy Pappe, Past District Governor, passed away May 5th. Memorial Service to be held on June 4. See Bob Savage or Bill Peloquin for details.

Burnie Lake shared stories of meeting his wife, Ann, in late 1951 and married in early 1952. She recently passed away from Post polio syndrome. Burnie brought donations in memory of his amounted to about $1000 towards the international Rotary Polio Plus Foundation, honoring his wife's extensive Fullerton connections through her store.

Leslie McCarthy’s was rewarded (for not going on vacation after learning that Jim Thompson wasn’t going to be available to run the show at the next Top 100 dinner), with an offer of access to industrial ovens for the next Top 100 dinner. (Apparently the Ebell Club ovens weren’t so hot last time). Leslie still needs help with shopping, setup, cooking, chopping and serving at the upcoming May 26th Top 100 dinner. Please contact her ASAP so we can make this another success!

Jim McKamy announced the May 19th district poker tournament at the Yorba Linda Community Center.

Minard Duncan Thanked all who helped make the FACES of Fullerton event last Saturday such a great success!

Mike Oates invited members to join a trip Aug.8-16 to our sister city (of 40 years) in Mexico for under $1500.

Upcoming Programs:
May 25 Deaf India Project - Dr. Desai.
June 1: Meeting at Grace Ministries;

Announcements (Continued)

Bill Mathy assured us that the next Demotion Night event, on June 29, at the Sheraton Four Points Hotel will be a “clock free” event…. it’s about time!

Our District Governor Elect, Bill Peloquin, told us that there’s still time to register for the June 18 Centennial Celebration Meeting in Chicago.

Jim Young announced that the virtual Paul Harris made an appearance in Oregon and brought back $500 for our Foundation.

David Schoen told us that Bob Engemann is having a challenging recovery and encourages calls to cheer him.

Recognitions (That sounds so much better than “Ruthless fines to aid the club treasury”, doesn’t it?)

Dick Daybell wasted no time in fining the entire “newest nine” $25. each for not absconding a US Flag from somewhere on campus to compliment the earlier flag salute ceremony.

Jim Blake received a double fine for the day.. $135 for Tulane University’s national standing and $5.00 for being first in the lunch line.

Dick then was light on the fines for the extraordinary efforts put fourth last Thursday’s Top 100 dinner by Bob Jahncke, Jim Thompson, Bill Mathy, Mike Oates, Leslie McCarthy and Wally Bartelt! Faced with challenges that threatened the flawlessness of the event, these folks made Rotary look good! Thanks!

Birthday fines were accessed to Randy McFarland, Bill Schenk, while Diane Masseth-Jones was double fined for a spousal birthday and for poaching asparagus! Other candidates weren’t present, so may be subject to fines next week.

Bob Clark Jr was nailed for his wife Pam’s birthday and admirably was discrete about disclosing the age of Pam, who was a classmate of mine at Sunny Hills High School, class of 1970.

Wally Bartelt seemed to really enjoy the attention as he basked in the harmonious serenade of the entire room singing “Happy Birthday”. I think he was able to hold back the tears of joy that certainly must have been welling up inside!

Raffle

No one was more surprised that raffle winner Bill Schenk himself when he suddenly and unexpectedly produced the correct answer, “Andrew Jackson” to the question of the day.

Program

Michelle Claud, Curator,
Santa Ana Zoo

Michelle Claud, curator of the Santa Ana Zoo, explained that primates have always been well represent in the resident animals due to the preference of the founder back in 1952. The zoo recently developed a farm area and is focusing or rare domestic breeds. Funded mostly by Santa Ana General Funds, the zoo has outreach programs for children of the area and is great for younger kids. One accomplishment Michelle is proud of is that one of their Ring Tailed Lemurs was successfully released in Madagascar and bred with a “wild one”!

The website for the zoo is www.santaanazoo.org. They have about 50 species and about 30 staff members

After thanking Michelle and others, Prez Bob offered the closing thought of the day:

“The World is a great mirror… it reflects back what you are.”
