Let the program begin…

The Honorable Don Bankhead, Fullerton City Councilman, introduced Jennifer Cabral from the Orange County Sanitation District.  Jennifer attended our own Cal State Fullerton.  Jennifer explained how the Sanitation District serves 24 cities and has two treatment facilities, one in Fountain Valley and the other in Huntington Beach.  They treat 230 million gallons of waster water per day.

There are private lateral lines from residences to city lines which dump into 426 miles of regional sewer lines.  The sewage is 99% water and 1% solid.  This is all sent through a primary treatment then a secondary treatment then disinfected and sent to the ocean in Huntington Beach, 200 feet deep and 14 ¼ times the length of Huntington Beach Pier.

The Ocean Monitoring Program is done different sites and is used as an example to other districts across the country.  They ensure the water is safe.  There are over 100,000 samples take every year.

Their ground water replenishment system utilizes micro-filtration, reverse osmosis and ultra-violet rays and then re-injects some of the water into the water fields.  The bio-solids sit at 98 degrees for 24 days then are trucked off to other areas to be used for non-food fertilizers.  Some of the big solids are being converted to coal and compost.

They are currently engaged in a $2.6 billion dollar capital improvement plan over the next 10 years for maintaining and improving their system so that 100% of the waste can go through the secondary treatment and be ultra pure.

Jennifer wanted to get two messages across with this presentation:

1.    NO DRUGS DOWN THE DRAIN!  Put in a sturdy container, then in a trash can where children & animals can’t reach them.

2.   The drain is not a dump!

The Orange County Sanitation District plant offers tours Monday through Friday between 9am and 3pm for groups of five or more.  Reservations must be made at least two weeks in advance.  OCSD will also offer regularly scheduled tours for individuals or groups of less than five on September 30 and November 25 from 9-10:30am.

The closing quote from President Chief Pat: Lets go win!
