Volume 67, Issue 34 Rota-Scribe: Leslie McCarthy

“The” Fullerton Rotary Club meeting was opened by our very own President Tom.

Flag Salute:

Dr. Nate led us in the flag salute.

Songs Lead By:

Howard Wood asked for “The Saints” to come marching into our meeting today.  Half the club thought he was speaking to them personally!  His entourage included Rev. Greg, Randy McFarland and Bob Savage.  We all “Smiled” our way into Randy’s heart.

Invocation:

Bernie Dunlop gave us thanks for friends, family, food, faith, freedom and fitness.

Visitors Introduced By:

Bill Mathy stood up for our guests including  Zoot Velasco, a guest of Craig Walker, Clara Melendez a guest of Bekah Havard, Jennifer Barnes, who was claimed by her proud father Bob Bean, Wendy Terrado a guest of Drew Napolin and Claudia Cabral who was sent to visit us by her professor at CSUF (Yeah).  Note that Zoot and Joe Lins both had their very own bow ties (neither of which could spin to Bill Mathy’s great disappointment).

President Tom reminded us that we would have Guest President Bill Mathy to look forward to in two weeks.

Announcements – Announcements – Announcements:

Dick Glaus is in the hospital after a bad fall and needs back surgery.  They are not encouraging visitors, but call or card might be nice.

  • Theresa Harvey and J Richey, have the posters and fliers for the Fab 4 concert
  • Sunrise Senior Living is on for the mixer tonight but J Richey has dibs on all the crab legs
  • 3/29/08 is the Track Meet at 8:00 a.m. per J Richey and they still need volunteers please!
  • A wonderful letter of recognition was received by Diane Masseth-Jones, for Jim and Dottie Young, as people like them help maintain a strong and vital US.  The letter was from President George Bush
  • Minard Duncan pointed us to the new Rotary Magazine that includes a great article about a man who learned to read in his 40s.  Reading by 9 is a great program and if I got my facts correct, nationally they have distributed 5,000,000 books to date
  • Randy McFarland is begging on his knees for reports due this week!!!!!!!!
  • Kathy Goch announced that her FHS singers were going to UCI for competition the 15th and 16th for District.  She also announced that their Spring Musical will be on the 21st and 22nd, 28th and 29th.   Their Annual Spring Musical will be at Villa del Sol on the April 26th as well.
  • Zoot thanked us for the opportunity to speak to us two weeks ago and announced that tonight is his gallery series opening at 8:00 p.m.
  • The Poker tournament is being moved to different date – DON’T GO on the 20th
  • A warm up act “The Hypnotics” has been booked for the dinner hour at our Fab 4 concert

Recognition and Fines

Allyn Lean superceded the recognition master.  He indicated he would be very brief, unlike Don Bankhead.  (His words, not mine Don.) He is only recognizing two members, but first asked the question as to “Why we were all here?”  He answered it with a wonderful summary beginning with Paul Harris’ words and highlighting the eradication of polio.  Dan Fisk, a Paul Harris 4 times over and Bekah Havard a brand new Paul Harris for our club were recognized and given their new pins.  Congratulations to both of you!

Warren Wimer was provided with the privilege of fining Don Bankhead for the program for last week and because Don does not have access to a computer, the fines was waived so he could start saving for one.

3/19 Prevention of Identity Theft will be discussed by Keith Mills.
3/26 Hope University will give a farewell program to Fullerton Rotary Club as we leave Hope U. for the new Elks Club location.

Recognition and Fines (continued)

Mark McGee has a spousal wife birthday.  John Christensen has an anniversary on the 13th with Terry.  Mark Zane has his birthday on Friday.  Vimal Seth (who did stand up) has his birthday on the Ides of March.  Jahncke  was fined for that one.  Ray Hanson was fined for having his birthday on St. Patty’s Day and  John Davis was almost ignored for his wife’s birthday on Tuesday.

Anyone missing a pin (Scott Dowds and Diane Masseth-Jones were the only ones honest enough to admit it) was surcharged $2.00 for not getting them at the start of the meeting.  Warren thanked the three lovely ladies who all started with great Rotary announcements and segued smoothly into a promotion of their businesses  $25.00 each.  Diane Masseth-Jones, Theresa Harvey and Kathy Goch were all honored to pay said fine.  Minard Duncan, Don Bankhead, Jay Kremer, Mark McGee, and Dick Daybell all need to look out for themselves.  As local politicians, they need to beware the “Ides of March” as we all know what happened to Julius Caesar on the 15th.   They were fined $10 each.  Dick Mathewson was fined for Cornell making it into the March Madness.  Dan Kiernan returned from Florida and was fined 2500 cents for his trip, a $10 fine for trip to the cold Antartic was assessed to John Phelps.  $29.25was levied on Bill Mathy for becoming a grandfather and Paul Dudley paid $25.00 for becoming a grandfather the first time.  Dan Fisk and his wife just returned from Hawaii as announced by Bob Bean who had to pay his fine for being a tattle-tale.

No fines were assessed against President Tom for two really old Irish jokes.  They were as follows:

What is 2 miles long and has a cumulative IQ of 50? – A St. Patty’s Day parade in Chicago

What is the difference between an Irish Wedding and Funeral? – 1 less drunk.

We cannot repeat Randy McFarland’s as it was worse than anything Mike Oates has ever told!

Raffle

For $50.00 Howard Wood drew the 2 of clubs and Coach Jeremiah donated $10.00 that he received in consolation.

Program

The “Gaucho Boy” from Argentina, Martin Hebeling introduced us to the new CLEES, “Osher Lifelong Learning Institute” (OLLI) at CSUF.  Martin and his dear wife Anita are privileged to know many of the members of our club and he was invited to speak to us in spite of his affiliation with another club that shall remain nameless.  He is grateful to have Dr. Jim Young is one of his mentors and was once voted “Worst Jokemaster of Fullerton College.”  OLLI is open to all who are 55 and over for membership.  Classes included are “Poetry for Pleasure” taught by Jim Young, computer classes, art classes and as pointed out by Bill Mathy and detailed on page 49 of the brochure “Sex After 50.”  Annual cost is $215.00 for three semesters of classes, free parking and social fun!  You may audit any class in the university with an id card from OLLI and the permission of the professor.

Thought for the Day

A friend of President Tom’s was finishing he and his wife’s trust.  In the instructions they asked to be cremated and their ashes spread all over Walmart, that way their daughters would visit them twice a week.

Proposed New Member: Debbie Sanchez, Real Estate, proposed by Joyce Capelle.
