Volume 66, Issue 43 Rota-Scribe: Randy McFarland

Ringing of the Bell-President Terri Grassi held the business end of the Rotary drumstick to strike the antique Rotary bell, commencing the meeting at 12:25PM.

Pledge- Honors were aptly and expediently performed by J Richey.

Song- Howard Wood received no cooperation when he offered to let us practice the challenging (and long) Fireman song we attempted at last week’s firehouse meeting, but we made it up to him by a rousing (and in tune) singing of “In the Merry Month of May”. Considering how well the song went, many members were no doubt dismayed by how short this song was, but we all felt better after singing “Smile”. J

Invocation- LeRoy Fulton came strikingly close to offering a thought of the day when he mused, “Life is a miracle…don’t let it slip away” prior to introducing Maryalyce Jeremiah, who offered a prayer of gratitude.

Visitors and Guests- Joyce Capelle, (immediate past president), fully aware of  the  demands of the office, elicited two rounds of applause for President Terri’s very successful term. Joyce then welcomed Bill Schenk back to our ranks after major heart surgery. In a bold demonstration of his renewed commitment to his health-promoting diet, Bill offered up his favorite   dessert (carrot cake) to Joyce at the lectern.

Bill Gillespie from Fullerton Rotary South

Bill Mathy- Dan Ouweleen

Dan Kiernan- Bill Hillhouse

Joyce Capelle-Rudy Olivas

Rotary Coin Circulation- While acknowledging that Bill Schenk was absent for medical reasons, Prez Terri cut him no slack for keeping his coin for so long and not bringing a guest, but in a fit of compassion, she presented him with a sewing kit to repair the hole that was certainly being burned in his pocket. Determined to have every member bring a guest before her term ends, she passed on coins to four more members.

Announcements- Prez Terri told of “Thank You” letters she received from Fullerton Interfaith Emergency Services, Fullerton Police Department and the YMCA as a result of Community Investment Awards that our club gave to these organizations. (These funds come from what us members personally donate.)

-District Conference this weekend- Terri Grassi

-Dental Clinic at Valencia School May 12- Minard Duncan

-Bill Schenk conveyed how he appreciated cards, letters, calls and concern during his early recuperation.

-Greg Hickman- Family friendly and free movie, “Happy Feet” at Christian Life Center.

-Rotary Bowling- May 17th 6PM Carter Lanes on Lemon- Rick Crane

-Cathy Gach- Mentioned an upcoming event at Villa del Sol for the Fullerton HS Arts Program.

-Kathy Allred- thanked those who helped with GSE team in any capacity and noted that a team will be part of next week’s program (along with Hope International Univ. Students.)

-Rotary Car Show- during the May 16 club meeting at the Muckenthaler. Bill Mathy

-Demotion Night- A true highlight of the year, Joyce Capelle encouraged our presence at this event, which has traditionally been a moving tribute to the retiring club president. She also mentioned “roast”… but this might have been in reference to the evening’s  entrée … who knows?

-Tom Meyer  has applications for anyone who wants to advertise in the district directory.

-Leroy Fulton conveyed that next week’s program speakers Hope International University students asked to sit amongst us during our luncheon.

Recognition- Ken Kaisch enhanced the club’s coffers with several fines:

-Dan Kiernan and John Phelps 70th Birthdays

-Bekah Havard- continued to smile after being fined for smiling while singing “Smile”.

-Bob Sattler- was fined for his graduating daughter aspiring towards accounting.

-Bob Clark was acknowledged in absentia for his great hospitality at the recent wine tasting and photos of Rotarians at the event were passed out.

-Walt Barnes- for his efforts raising money for the Foundation.

-Joyce Capelle for giving Ken Kaisch extra time to settle in to his new office  before she welcomes him to the neighborhood on Chapman Avenue.

-Bill Klinghoffer-for being honored by Fullerton Arts and by Cal State Fullerton

-Bill Gorman- for wearing a special jersey which Bill claimed was for his enthusiastic eating technique.

-Dick Glause and Bob Radde were recognized for their efforts with Interact at the local High Schools. Dick was presented a special pin, but because Bob’s existing pin was in clear view, he missed out on getting another one.

Opportunity Drawing- Ken Kaisch missed pulling the joker, drawing a King.. and like Walt Barnes three weeks ago, he kept the card, leaving Terri with a second incomplete deck.

Program- “Club Assembly”

Tom Meyer, our upcoming president (starting in July) noted that it will be our club’s 85th Anniversary. He reviewed the Object of  Rotary, and the  purpose of our club in our community, both locally and internationally. He noted how our club has continued to grow, (no easy feat for a large club), and recounted some of our great projects and accomplishments during the past year under Terri Grassi. Tom conveyed the importance of looking forward to future goals by quoting Yogi Berra, “If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up somewhere else.”  He expressed confidence  that our club will play an important active role in the upcoming Rotary International Annual Convention to be held in Los Angeles

Next year’s theme will be “Rotary Shares” ….a good match with our “Share Rotary-Pass it On” invite-a-guest program. Tom made it clear that he would not accept hugs from this Rotascribe. While our previous two presidents didn’t strenuously object to a hug, I did learn that Tom is OK with a “high five”…(easy to do if he is sitting down)

Vern Andrews was invited to briefly describe the new bi-district, strictly Rotary Program, “Home front Project” that takes last year’s successful “Snowball Express” a step further by offering life skills and other vital services to spouses of fallen solders. Our club immediately decided to support this important project, agreeing to an initial $10. contribution from each member.

Thought of the Day- Recognizing withdrawal symptoms among certain members, (Bob Radde) Prez Terri acknowledged that she didn’t offer a closing thought at last week’s firehouse meeting, so she treated us to two this week… “People who fight fire with fire often end up with ashes” and “Every oak tree started off as a couple of nuts who stood their ground.”

Proposed Returning Member: Bob Hillhouse, by Dan Kiernan. Bob is at Merril-Lynch in Brea, working as a Wealth Manager
Proposed New Member: Dan Ouweleen, by Bill Mathy. Dan is a model maker for the airline industry.
