THERE STANDS GENERAL JACKSON LIKE A STONEWALL…Civil War history buff and retired Fullerton School District junior high school teacher Jim Schlotthaauer regaled us with fascinating stories and anecdotes about colorful military and political personages during that period. See "PROGRAM".

The Pledge by JIM LAPAK followed by the "Summer Solstice Quartet" (Two BOBs, a JIM and a GRIFF) with a pair of classic songs set the tone for the meeting. "Motivational Quotes" from Winston Churchill was the theme of DAN KIERNAN's "Thought(s) for the Day". "Don't evah give up. Nevah give in, nevah, nevah, give in to nuthin--except convictions of honor and good sense" As the sage from Brooklyn was admonishing us, one Rotarian was overheard, "Are we evah going to eat?"

VISITORS and GUESTS introduced by CHUCK MUNSON: PREZ PELOQUIN -- Rotary Club of Fullerton (Prez returned to the Chair after several missed meetings. Reclassified from VISITOR status after this meeting.), BILL GILLESPIE -- Rotary South, BERNIE DUNLAP – Brea, PAUL DUNLAP -- E. Moline, IL. GUESTS: MATHEW ESCALANTE, CSUF student son of MIKE ESCALANTE, RHONDA J. MCCUNE, former Mayor of Buena Park, guest of FRANKI BERRY

ROTARIANS OF THE SPRING SESSION: PREZ BILL recognized four strong Rotary volunteers for their quiet but effective contributions to the success of our programs : BOB CLARK, SR., BOB BEAN; FRANK KAWASE; BILL HITE.

RAFFLE: Perpetual winner Dennis Ullrich, former U.S. Army helicopter crew member, lost the pot by not knowing that PREZ PELOQUIN served in the NAVY. (Instead of giving him the $10 consolation prize, the PREZ should have assigned him "lunch time mess striker" duty--known in the Army as K.P.)

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

* July 3rd Rotary meeting 12:10PM in Rotary Room at CSUF. Come by the entrance kiosk on Nutwood for parking pass.

* Monday, July 15th, Boy & Girls Clubs of Fullerton Hoby Brenner Golf Tournament Coyote Hills Golf Course.

* Demotion Night, July 10th at the Crown Plaza Hotel (Elks Lodge dark at noon)

RECOGNITION: Finemaster JIM BLACKBURN on his last time for a while. He will return for occasional appearances. Hard act to follow. BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES. (Lots of June honorees absent. Went through quite a number before BILL MATHY'S spouse ROBIN and TOM MEYER's spouse LINDA had their anniversaries and birthdays recognized. AL TRIAY rose on a "point of order" to chastise the Finemaster for failing to recognize the entire TRIAY family's June birthday, wedding and baptismal anniversaries. Finemaster fined himself for oversight, and implied to AL that retribution for past slights knew no time limits. Tomorrow's another day. LEE MHYRE, the Seer from Nebraska, conceded that "N" on the helmets of the Nebraska football team stood for (K)Nowledge. Finemaster BLACKBURN also reminded him that the reason U. of N. put Astroturf in the football stadium was to keep their cornfed cheerleaders from grazing on the grass.

PROGRAM: HERITAGE OF THE CIVIL WAR

JIM SCHLOTTHAUER reflected on the great personages of the Civil War on both sides. Particularly Confederate General T.J. "Stonewall" Jackson, CSA, who has served as a role model for noted latter day military leaders viz., Wehrmacht Panzer General Erwin Rommel and U.S. Army Generals Patton and Schwartzkof. Had he not been killed early in the Civil War, his military leadership might have made a difference in the outcome. Jim had a number of interesting anecdotes such as how "ladies of the evening" became to be known as "hookers"; who established the KKK; the true story about Lincoln's Gettysburg Address; the coincidences of the Wilbur McClain houses in Northern Virginia. A veritable fountainhead of American History, Jim is justly proud of his influence on the lives of his former students many who have succeeded in life to become outstanding citizens. The Fullerton School District has been fortunate to have Jim on its faculty for over 30 years.

PREZ PELOQUIN's "Closing Quote" presaged the upcoming political season: "If you have nothing to say, give a wordy speech to prove the point"

We Get Letters…

“Thank you for a delightful concert…It was a wonderful opportunity for them to perform for their peers from other schools as well as their families- especially in such a great venue. And what a worthwhile community service to make it a fundraiser for the individual school programs! Thanks for your partnership with Fullerton schools.” – Christy & Mark Naynaber, Ladera Vista parents

“How can we thank Rotary enough?! The concert was our most successful yet…please know how much we appreciate your efforts to support the arts in our schools!” – Lauralyn Eschner, Fullerton School District.
