Craft Talk - Dr Steven Miyamoto
Be Careful when you are smiling.

Meeting was called to order by club president Jim Ripley who welcomed everyone and kept it short, “I was going to tell a bunch of jokes, but because of the amount of announcements today, I am keeping it short.” Never to disappoint, President Ripley told some jokes, “I have a joke about chemistry, but I don’t think you’ll get a reaction. I also have a joke about pizza, but it’s a little cheesy.”

For our Commencement Ceremonies, Taz Stachelski led us in our Patriotic Moment with the Pledge of Allegiance.

Our Song Master today was Bill Edman and his piano which led us to the tune of “America the Beautiful.” Always reliable, Bill did an excellent job during the Song Master segment.

Today’s guest is Don McFarland, guest of Bob Sattler.

Proposed New Member: Don McFarland, Brother of Randy McFarland, proposed by Bob Sattler

Our Recognition Master was Scott “the Great” Dowds who recently returned from vacationing in Europe. “I’m going to fine myself $20 for my anniversary which was in January,” said Scott. Frances Hunter was asked to stand and be recognized and fined for her birthday on January 18. Frances was asked what her plans were for her birthday celebration, “Spend some time with my kids and friends,” she responded. Scott was fining members $2 per recognition and five for those who complained. Steve McLaughlin was asked to stand and be recognized for his birthday on January 20. When asked what he will be doing for his birthday, he said that he is going to wait until March to celebrate for his wife’s birthday. Bob Muschek, who quite possibly has given us the funniest moment of the year, considering its only January. Scott asks Bob to stand and be recognized for his birthday which is January 20, “my birthday is on Saturday. So, I hope to get a little lucky.” After further explanation, Scott was able to learn that Bob meant “lucky being able to get out of bed.” Bob Simon was recognized for his wife’s birthday on January 20, although not present, Scott promised to collect the $2 fee. Zoot Velasco was asked to stand and be recognized for his wife Monette’s birthday, “So, she’s born on Inauguration Day, and she feels that we have to celebrate birthday month in our house for her.” Zoot was fined $2. Joe Lins was asked to stand and be recognized for his amazing work he did making sure all members voted that day, “you’ve been running around here telling people what to do, right?” asked Scott. “Where you able to get it done? Did everyone vote? For railroading your votes, what should that be worth?” asked Scott to the crowd. It was unanimous and Joe Lins received a discount on his fine and was asked to pay for half. Thank you for your efforts, Joe, you did a good job. John Phelps was asked to stand and be recognized for his recent move. He was also fined $10 for a cruise he recently took. Scott then asked for “the real leader of ‘Fullerton Uncorked” to please stand up. You can hear a pin drop because the silence echoed throughout the room. Scott asked Cathy Gach to please stand and receive a round of applause because she has been doing an amazing job leading this event. Scott then reminded Dave Bates that our next meeting will be at the Clock Ribbon Cutting Event. Special shout out to Bill Mathy for all of dedication, work, and commitment on the Fullerton Rotary Club Clock. Scott Dowds did an excellent job as Recognition Master.

Today’s Announcements: Jim Williams announced to make sure to check off your name for next week’s lunch boxes at the Clock Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Also, members are encouraged to recommend food vendors and restaurants for Fullerton Uncorked event, please contact Cathy with more information.

The President-elect was a close race, Leslie McCarthy wins by a hair. Congratulations to the upcoming chairman and board of directors.

Today’s Program at Hand, New Member Craft Talk with Dr. Steven Miyamoto DDS. Dr. Miyamoto thanked everyone for having him and thanked his friend Dr. Bob Simon, who got him involved in Rotary. During his craft talk, he talked about his trade, his time living in Fullerton, growing up in the San Gabriel Valley and his time at UCLA. Steven grew up in Alhambra, attending Alhambra High and completing his undergraduate at UCLA, which is where his parents attended as well, “It was pretty hard and actually I looked back with a lot of bitter in years, but I still appreciate how good of a school it was.” He attended New Jersey Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery residency where he was able to work closely with one of the greatest surgeons in the world, Norman Betts DDS, “he wrote and helped co-author many of the textbooks.” Dr. Miyamoto is a fan of fine dining and cooking, and as a hobby, he collects baseball card, he is a Los Angeles Dodgers and Lakers Fan. “So, I was fortunate to be names a good representative in Orange County Magazine, it’s a big deal for me.” As for his trade, he says he uses cutting edge tools of the field and deals with a lot of complicated devices, “for implants, the longest lasting average lifespan of all implants is seven years, but in 26 years of placing implants, I’ve only had four implants fail.” He went over how he performs implant surgery on patients with the use of scientifical illustrations which reflects the amount of experience he’s had in his field. “So, in the computer lab, we’re going to digitally restore the image. We need to put the surgical guide, a computer guided implant guide,” he explains using technical terms of the trade. For those parent’s concerns of their kids teeth being crooked, he recommends on having an orthodontist work on them at around the age of 15 to 16. Dr. Miyamoto has a beautiful relationship with his patients, “We’re very grateful for the patients that we have, I love the people here,” Dr. Miyamoto says. “Don’t take this the wrong way, but I hope you never need our services. Thank you.” He took some questions from members present and then President Ripley awarded him with a certificate in his name to Working Dogs 4 Warriors, a nonprofit dedicated to helping our Nation’s Warrior by training and donating service dogs to Veterans and First Responders.

Last thing on the agenda was the 50/50 drawing. Carol Morris wins the drawing with lucky ticket ending in 4841. “Next week we will not meet here. We will be attending the ribbon cutting event for the Fullerton Rotary Club Clock. Please click that subscribe button and like. Meeting is adjourned!
