The Role and Imapct of the OC Board of Education Meeting was promptly called to order by President Ripley who wished everyone a happy Dia De Los Muertos. President Ripley started off with a soft joke to test the waters out, “I meant to send a memo out yesterday. Just to remind everyone not to let their pumpkins drink because they always get smashed.” This next joke is even better, “I attended a party this weekend and also I may have a little too much to drink,” President Ripley said. “I had to cross the dance floor to get another drink and ended up winning the dance contest- Most creative dancing. Update on the CIA Awards, we are still holding at $15,700, somebody out there has got an extra $4,000. “I am sure they can come up with so we can get that extra $10,000 match.” For our Commencement Ceremonies, Leslie McCarthy gave us our Invocation leading us with a prayer, “bless the Lord for these, which we are about to receive from thy bounty of Christ.” Leslie also led us in our Patriotic Moment. Today’s guests include John Nielsen, guest of Dick Ackerman Our Recognition/Fine Master today was Rick Crane who was heckled by Mike Oates as he was going on stage. Rick fined Mike Oates $5. He then asked all attorney’s present to please stand and be recognized. Mr. Crane then took some humble brags, Aaron Gregg bragged about his 6th grandchild, Zoot Velasco bragged about his wedding anniversary, and Jim Williams bragged for his Halloween costume. Today’s announcements, for the week of Thanksgiving, on the 22nd of November, we will not be hosting our weekly rotary meeting. We will be dark on that day. Also, our Christmas Party this year will be on December 13, 2023, “we will not be having a noon time meeting, but we’ll be meeting that evening for the party and we’ll also be dark on the 27th, of December. Our Program at hand was introduced by former State Senator Dick Ackerman, “Today’s speaker has been very active in everything his entire life. He’s been on La Habra City Council four terms now. Please welcome, Tim Shaw.” Tim Shaw is currently the president of the Orange County Board of Education and much of his presentation was his thoughts about education in California and in Orange County. Tim thanked everyone and complimented the club’s humor which compliments his own humor towards his six kids. Mr. Shaw remembers being asked about running for the County Board of Education, back in 2020, “I went ahead and threw my hat in the ring and got elected. It’s been a lot of fun doing that. Does anyone know what does the County Board of Education do?” Orange County has 28 school districts at the K through 12 level, so whenever a school needs something officially, they report to OC Board of Education. A Board of Education handles all kinds of matters for students and their families and budgeting. Him and his teams are in charge of hiring and firing of the board’s lawyer. “So, critics of our board will talk about how we are endlessly engaged in lawsuits. It’s true, we have been in a number of lawsuits, but you’ll notice our critics barely speak specifically about a particular lawsuit because I think these are very justified lawsuits.” Tim Shaw says that people online are upset with them, they are being called fiscally irresponsible. Mr. Shaw talked voting, arbor trees and Orange County housing throughout his presentation. He then took some questions from audience members. President Ripley thanked Tim for his presentation and presented him with a certificate in his name to Working Dogs 4 Warriors, a non-profit dedicated to helping our Nation’s Warriors by training and donating service dogs to Veterans and First Responders. Last thing on the agenda was the 50/50 drawing. Lucky ticket number 4543 wins the money. “Join us for next week’s program, City of Fullerton Infrastructure Challenges update, with Public Works Director Stephen Bise. I don’t know about you, but I think I am going to gather up all my receipts for tires, shops, and alignments. Maybe they have a way to get me reimbursed. Invite a friend, please hit that like button and subscribe. Meeting is adjourned.”
