Past District Governor Dan Ouweleen

Program: Past president and past District Governor Dan Ouweleen Update on the Rotary International Foundation.

Meeting was opened by Zoot Valasco filling in for our absent president Jim Ripley. The Patriotic Moment was given by new member Lisa Wozab. Invocation by Bob Muschek. Song master Roco and members of the newest nine

Our Newest Members: Lisa Wozab, Amy Choi-Won, and Sally Williams

had us sing America the Beautiful and Smile.

Dan Ouweleen gave and announcement about his experience helping decorating the Rotary float for the Rose parade and had flyers telling us on how to volunteer for this years Rose Parade.

Finemaster/Recognition Master was Matt Howells (Our future President) All right, first off, we're going to fine Bob Jahncke $5 because he took his ears out as soon as Zoot got up because he was overwhelmed. Understandable. $10 to pay for that. Mr. Howard? You have a birthday coming? Did you go to Wisconsin, for your regular summer trip? And you came back just in time for your birthday. Are you doing anything for your birthday?

We are going for dinner but I have not been informed where. $5 Thank you, sir.

Recognized Dan and Susan Ouweleen for their anniversary of 8 years $10. Recognized Rashawn for $1 for his Rotary anniversary. Dick Ackerman was fined $5 got failing to construct a marina in Fullerton while he was on the city council. Dick was fined another $5 for Brett Ackerman having the Boys and Girls Club gala on the same day as Tara’s Chance riding with the Stars gala on October 7. And since Brett is not here you are guilty by association. Marty Burbank was recognized for doing the Veterans in the Park every Monday morning and bringing coffee and donuts, Bill Mathy bragged for now having 9 grandkids, so he paid $9.

Zoot then announced our program for today. We have not seen much of Dan for over a year. And we are glad to have him back in our club. Because he's been busy doing those district governor duties. And I was there when the new district governor came in and the first thing he said is I'm gonna make you what is the vice district governor for another year so he got suckered into another year of helping out with the district. But we are really glad to have you back in the club. You'll always be the guru of all things district to us. And in that capacity. He's going to tell us today about the Rotary International Foundation.

Dan: “I'm here to actually do a couple of things today. I am here to talk a little bit about the foundation. We have a lot of new members of this club and that is fantastic. I have to tell you that we were the largest. While we were the we had the biggest gain and membership in the district. We went after a few people left at 21. And that was significant. The club has just done a heck of a job in growing and so with so many new members. It's really important that we understand about the Rotary Foundation because we have our own club Foundation. And then we have Community awards. And then there's the Rotary Foundation so it can get pretty confusing. As far as what all the different foundations do. So we're gonna talk a little bit today about the Rotary Foundation. And a part of that is one of my favorite parts in Rotary is recognizing what we call the Paul Harris Fellows. Paul Harris Fellows are people have given $1,000 or more to the Rotary Foundation, and it's a lifetime recognitions. It's it's not a destination, it's a milestone. And the money that is given by those who contribute to the Paul Harris through Rotary, you know, basically goes to do all the good that we do in the world. And we're gonna talk more about that today. For each additional $1,000 You get another payment with another ruby. That goes all the way up to what they call a major donor level, which is the $10,000 level. Then you get a nice crystal from Rotary and you get some further recognition. And then there's other awards that go beyond that at the higher levels. But our club twice now in its history has been 100%of the members as Paul Harris Fellows, which is quite an achievement, especially for a club our size.

I think we have two new Paul Harris Fellows, and I don't think they're here today. Dr. Pletka and Stephanie Godel They aren't here today. So we'll to get to them later.

The following people received Paul Harris recognition. Duane Greenleaf, Irene Lang, Louis Kuntz, +1 Marty Burbank, Joe Arnold, Zoot Valasco, Jeff Hutchison Joe Lins +2. Bob Jahncke, Carl Camp, +4 Jim Williams, Dan Kiernan, Bill Mathy, Dan Fisk, +5

I want to take a little bit of a few moments just to talk about the Rotary Foundation itself. And our foundation for rotary is pretty amazing. It's one of the top foundations in the world. It's really all about the money we give. The foundation is here to help support the clubs to do the good that we do all around the world. And see all these relief efforts going on with Rotary in Maui you know what happened with the earthquake over in Turkey. The funds for that all come from what we donate to the Rotary Foundation and make happen. This last year. Our district received two disaster relief grants for Turkey, where they just sent us $25,000 To send over to Turkey. So twice was $50,000. We didn't have to put any money in there just money that they gave to us to go over and help from Turkey. We did multiple ones for the Ukraine as well. So it's a it's amazing the power that they have with the money that the foundation has in the foundation. There's seven areas of focus that the foundation uses the funds for is: peace building, disease prevention, water and sanitation and Hygiene, maternal and child health, basic education, literacy, Community Economic Development, and the latest new one a few years ago is the environment. Any of those areas that we're doing work we can get Rotary International Foundation funds to support. This all started in 1917 is when the Foundation was established, and it was done through the outgoing Rotary president. It was set up with the additional contributions, which were not very big. But today, it has grown to over $4 billion and they're working to get it to $5 billion right now. And it's one of the few foundations that has a four star rating for Charity Navigator and they look at 1000s of charities and we are at the top 1% of all charities out there. The reason why were in the top 1% is because 93% of the money we give the Rotary Foundation gets to the cause. That just does not happen in those foundations. And the reason that happens with Rotary is because of we're mostly a volunteer organization. We're not taking big salaries. I know mine was not that big.

This club made it happen. So thank you, Marty. And then just big project we were part of this problem. We basically this is a lesson with global grants is you can partner with other clubs. If another club is working on a global grant, and it's a grant that we're interested in, we could just partner with them and we can just, offer to get some money. The Guatemalan literacy project is one of the biggest global grant projects going it's several $100 billion dollars worth of aid. The Guatemalan literacy project that we participated in this is this particular one is driven by the Euro political. So we've partnered with them, and we could do the same thing here. We can do a global grant project and just get other clubs to partner with us. I'm not going to go through all the math, but it's, again, it's pretty amazing how quickly the math multiplies to where we're putting in a little bit of money but we're getting a lot of money to do programs and scale.

But why give to the Annual Fund? Well, you know, obviously we're changing people's lives. You know, here's our community around the world, with the money that we get, you know from the VDF and then we can get from a global audience. So, really, when you look at it, you know, when you give to the Rotary Foundation, you're doing something for someone or you're touching some lives somewhere in the world. You're putting a smile on somebody's face, somewhere in the world. That's pretty priceless. And that's in combination with our foundation. It's amazing what work we can do with the little bit we get. So there's a number of programs everybody has that there's some brochures on the table, they left and there's several ways to give Of course you can just mail money in each year to the foundation or you can go online. There's an easy website to sign up on. And you can do an automatic deduction you can pay by credit card or you can have it deduct automatically every month. There is of course we talked about the Paul Harris program. There also is a sustaining member program, which is someone who gives just $100 a year to Rotary Foundation, you're considered a sustaining member. And then there's a every club if every club gets each person on average, giving you a 25 minimum year we'd become a every club every year club. Would love to get us back to 100% Paul Harris right now, if anybody wants to know where they are on there, Paul Harris, just let me know and I got the numbers and I can tell you what, where you're at and how many points you might have already accumulated to give away to someone else. And that's again, a great way to help each other here in the club. If someone's able to maybe give $500 We may be able to match that versus $500 with points to make it to a Paul Harris. We've done that many, many times over the years and I'd like to see us do that again because it would be great to get us to be 100% Paul Harris again.

The other one is the Paul Harris Society. But it's a little opinionated here because it's this bit here. That is if you're giving $1,000 you commit to giving $1,000 a year and again, it's $85 a month you become a member of Paul Harris society. I already mentioned the ways to give you like a Rotary direct on the website. You log into Rotary.org, donate and you can easily sign up to have a deducted. It's just incredible. What the annual fund does. I do want to mention when you give money to polio plus, that does not come back to the district that just stays for polio. So it's the money that we give to the annual fund that actually comes back - 50% of the district's for us to spend. So that's it.

In years past we send out emails to people that have to, encourage them to either use the Paul Harris Funds, or give them away. We're going to do that again. I have been talking to Jim Ripley, I've got to have Jim's approval. What we're going to do a point match, because also the money that you give the club gets points so the club also has points you can give away towards another Paul Harris Fellow. You know, the president each year has to decide how they're going to Congress, they want to give away how much they want to match. So I've been in communication with Jim that will be coming out with something pretty shortly and what we're going to do on that and the everybody that should have gotten a letter from district this year of where your points are at if you're already a member, if any of us got that letter this year, so but we'll do it again as a clock. So everybody will know exactly what any other questions on the foundation. All right. Anytime you guys have questions, just let me know. And there's also an incredible foundation team at the district level and so they can answer any questions you have on the foundation and Marty is actually in our foundation. He was an advocate of so I think another good program, later on we'll be talking about. Thank you.

Endowment gifts are five minutes. Endowments are gifts that you can give that stay in perpetuity and can always continue to give. And then there's planned gifts, which are gifts that often happen when you pass away but they also might be a gift that happens when you have some big liquidation when you sell your business or we sell a property that you had. But you're planning to do that. And there's some tax planning you can do to make sure that you avoid capital gains taxes. Thank you. So thank you, everybody.

Zoot had the 50/50 drawing which was won by Rick Crane who donated the $50 to the Rotary foundation. All right!!

Zoot closed out the meeting with a quote from Will Rogers who said “I don’t belong to any organized party.. I’m a Democrat (or a Republican).
