District Governor Roy Jefferson Visits Our Club

Meeting was called to order by President Jim Ripley. 'Hello fellow Rotarians. Welcome to our meeting. Every once in a while, someone amazing comes into your life and here I am. You're welcome.' President Jim Ripley is a humble, man of the people. He shouted out our special guest Anna Yeon, who played the cello for the club during lunch. Anna also is an intern for Marty Burbank. This is day 3 on the job for President Ripley, 'how do I do it? I do want to mention we had a wonderful board meeting. We've got a lot of great stuff planned.' According to him, today is bring your boss to work day. 'With us today is Roy Jefferson, district governor and his lovely wife Janice. Thank you for being here.'

For our Commencement Ceremonies, Army Veteran Bill Hite led us in our Patriotic Moment and flag salute. Miko Krisvoy led us in our Invocation.

Due to some unfortunate difficulties, there was no Songmaster today.

Our Recognition Master/Finemaster was super-hero attorney, Marty Burbank. Marty asked Aaron Greg to stand and be recognized, “so two weeks ago, our new president had his very first meeting. You weren’t here. What was the reason for that?” Aaron says he had a court deposition that day. Marty fined him $5 for picking that time for a deposition. Since no one who was being recognized present, Marty played a game of "quotes" with each table. It was simple, Marty said a quote and if the table got it right, there would be no fine. The fine was worth $5 each. The quotes varied from Eleanor Roosevelt, Betty Davis, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Mother Theresa; the topic was famous historic women. Marty did a great job, “so nobody got any of those right because we collected a lot of money.'

Today’s announcements, President Ripley announced for Cathy Gach. She wanted to remind everybody that your payments are due. If you didn't get an invoice by email, it's probably in your spam. If you have not received an invoice, please contact Cathy Gach.

Jordan Garcia announced the YMCA Annual Dinner Fundraiser. It's our crab feast event. It's an all you can eat crab feast; all you can drink event. There's live entertainment and we also have a live auction.' All the proceeds of the event go to support the YMCA's child program to provide free after school childcare. The dinner takes place on Saturday September 9 from 6 to 10 p.m. Please contact Jordan Garcia for more information. If you missed the week's meeting in person, the Fullerton Rotary Club's Facebook page has got you covered. Please like, follow, and share with your friends and family.

Our Program at Hand was introduced by immediate past district governor, Dan Ouweleen. 'I am here to talk about Roy today. Roy started from humble beginnings, growing up back east in Tennessee. A product of a solid family, hard working parents. Roy was quite ambitious at an early age. He started early on in his career in State Farm Insurance. In fact, today, if you go on the State Farm website, you see his face there. Roy loves all kinds of sports. He also loves people and getting to know the community. He loves to help others. Roy is very generous with his time. He gets involved with many projects with his club and around the district and is an all-around guy who loves helping people. So, with that, please help me in welcoming our new district governor, Roy Jefferson.' DG Roy Jefferson took the stage and thanked everyone for letting him meet the club. This is the best part of being governor. I see so many familiar faces in this room. I have visited a lot of clubs over the years. You guys have always been special.

DG Jefferson toasted our club for its 100-year anniversary. “I salute the men and women who started this club. 100 years of serving the community.” Roy Jefferson has been a State Farm Agent in Anaheim Hills for 40 years now. He credits his career with State Farm as the reason him and his wife Janice have been able to travel the world. He started his presentation with adding to what Dan Ouweleen has already stated. Roy was born in rural Tennessee, outside of Memphis, one of 11 kids. He remembers hardships until his mom remarried when he was 13. He credits his stepfather, Mr. Somerville for changing his life. “Mr. Somerville was a remarkable man. You have to be remarkable if you marry a woman with 11 kids.” His main purpose for the visit was not to talk about himself though, as district governor he wanted to hear about our club, all the service projects that we do like the Jim Thompson Track and Field Championship, and the Community Investment Awards. “We give away about $30,000 a year to our community organizations with our CIA awards. These awards make a huge difference.” The Fullerton Rotary Club does a lot for the Fullerton Community; it helps community members with food insecurities, provide books for schools, it participates in the Japanese Student Exchange Program, our club helps college students attain cap and gowns when financially burdened, and our club works with many non-profits in our community with a cause with fundraising, grants, and scholarships. DG Roy Jefferson is really impressed with it all and encourages our club members to tell our friends and neighbors all that we do, so they can get involved as well. “Don’t just let them know, invite them, post something on social media letting people know when and where, and how they can join. If you are doing a project, invite the community members. Urge them to come out.” His plans for the year include the growth of all the clubs in his district. He is calling all Rotarians to talk to their members of the community about Rotary International and becoming a Rotarian. He also talked about the Rotary Foundation, which is the number one charity of Rotary International. “It was easy for me to decide to become a Paul Harris society member. Our district lags far behind other districts in the number of Paul Harris society members.” Roy Jefferson is a goal-oriented person, one of his goals this year is to gain 100 new Paul Harris Society Member in our district. September is also Service Month, and he plans on reaching out to the media and have them join Rotary Clubs in a project to get some media attention, “we’ll let the print media know. It will be our excuse to reach out to the media every September and we’ll let the public know all the doors of all the service clubs are open. To come and visit and find out what we do and hopefully join.” The Chili Cook Off is also another service project he hopes to kick off again. Dan Ouweleen had a soft opening on bringing it back last year, but Roy plans on making it bigger this year. There are so many new and old things that new district governor Roy Jefferson has planned for this year, but his most meaningful project will be to focus on mental health. “We all know how much mental health has been in the news. I decided for us to focus on mental health awareness and do a walk/march. I’ll be asking all of our friends and family to join us in the walk. We’ll have a resource center at the end of the walk so those that need some guidance we’ll have someone to talk to.” Talks with the city of Anaheim are in works to hold the event there. Roy ended his visit by telling us that he plans on making a comeback to our club during the second half of the year to hear about all the exciting things our club has been up to.

President Ripley took the stage and thanked Roy for personally helping him with his presidency. “I appreciate it very much as well as Dan who was very instrumental in helping me figure out what goes on. Thank you.” President Ripley awarded Roy with a Coyote Hills Golf Cap and will also donate in his name to Working Dogs for Warriors organization, a nonprofit dedicated to donating service dogs for veterans and first responders.

Last thing on the agenda was the 50/50 drawing. Lucky ticket holder 6360534 wins the money! “Next week’s program is all about law enforcement. A State of the County Address from Orange County Sherriff Don Barnes.” President Ripley closes today’s meeting with his signature line, “Don’t forget to hit that like button and subscribe. Meeting adjourned!”
