Recognitions

Minard Duncan was vigilant about following up on collecting on previous fine opportunities, like Larry Bennett for his birthday. Joe Arnold was fined for a birthday and claimed that he knows how to spell “Ouweleen” (this is one of the many benefits of being a Rotascribe) Vern Andrews celebrates is 57th wedding anniversary as does Howard Minkley. Minard hadn’t collected much in the way of fines until he invoked the Four Way Test when asking the entire club who knew how to spell “Ouweleen”, and who our District Governor and our Rotary President. $1.00 fine for each wrong answer.

Program

Past President Scott Dowds introduced our guest, Dr. Barbara Stone Emeritus Professor at Cal State University, Fullerton. She was the chair of the Political Science Department from 1973-1978, and the National Republican Women 1998 Woman of the Year.

Dr. Stone has spoken to our club a few times in the past, enlightening us on political goings on, but admitted that she has never seen anything like this year’s presidential race.

Dr. Stone noted that most presidential candidates come from state governorships and senate seats, not house speakers or house representatives. She commented that the medial helped Trump by all the coverage, mostly because he was entertaining. Cruz was poised to win evangelical voters but Trump upset those plans. Dr. Stone noted that people have a tendency to classify people but that doesn’t always hold true when they vote. She said that 1/3 of Hillary voters are because they are against Trump. She suspects that some blacks may not turn out as expected to vote for Hillary.

Regarding the Propositions, #62 is to abolish the death penalty and #66 is to speed up the death penalty. Don’t vote for both!

Proposition #52 would call on a fee from hospitals which would come back to hospitals for Medi-cal patients and is permanent. Dr. Stone mentioned that 1/3 of Californians are on Medi-cal. Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association is involved with this.

Nancy was not supportive of a couple of other initiative retarding prescription drug costs compared to what’s charged to the Veteran’s Administration. She also did not think that legalization of marijuana was a good idea.

Closing thought of the day: “Never too late to be what you might have been.”
