President Bill Schenk opened the meeting with thanks for another beautiful day in Fullerton. Don Bankhead gave the invocation with a prayer for the many persons in Africa facing the dreaded ebola infection. Ray Hansen, as the only member having 50 years of perfect attendance, was asked to do the flag salute. Jay Kremer welcomed guests of Rotarians. Rick Crane had Fullerton Mayor Doug Chaffee and his wife Paulette as guests. Deborah Sanchez had her son Phillip as a guest. Phillip is a US Army Special Services member protecting the US from outside harm. Hurray for the work they do!!
Terri Grassi welcomed Rotarians to a visit to the Los Alamitos Track on October 25 at 5:30 for dinner and a chance to see (and be seen) and bet on the horses. Please contact Terri for tickets.
Jim Williams stated that a Fullerton Rotary memorial for Jim Young will be on October 29th at our regular meeting. Jim Young was the epitome of what a good Rotarian should be. As an originator of the Cal- State Fullerton College of the Arts and as a world traveler promoting Rotary ideals, he made a tremendous contribution to Fullerton and to Rotary. Bring your personal stories about Jim Young for presentation at the meeting.
Dan Ouweleen reminded all Rotarians that the End Polio Jog-A-Thon will be on Saturday, October 18th at Troy High School. Several have signed up to help at the event but more volunteers certainly will be helpful. Event will be at the Troy High School field beginning about 8:00 am. Many Rotarians have donated to the event but we are short of the goal of $40,000 so there is a need for more donations.
Vern Andrews reminded all Rotarians of the Endowment Fund gifts given in the Fall of the year. He has only two requests so far and asks for additional proposals. Though proposals are not selected for the Fall they will be carried over for the Community Grants in the Spring.
Sandy Hayes encouraged all coordinators of Fellowship Lunches and their group to make progress on their lunch engagements. Coordinators were encouraged to contact group members the day before to remind them of the luncheon date. Bill Schenk encouraged members to choose a restaurant other than Café Hidalgo as he has gone to four luncheons at Hidalgos so far.
The Charity Donation (Raffle) was won by Ray Hansen allowing him to seek the winning red chip. The prize was somewhat nebulous but in the range of $150 or more. Unfortunately, the red chip was again not located. The hidden card trick by Zoot Velasco of past meetings has been replaced by the hidden chip trick by Bill Schenk. (Hint by Bill Kincaid is to seek the warm chip as it had been previously handled).
Scott Dowds was the Recognition Master. He commended Sharon Quirk-Silva for her work in developing a Veterans Cemetery for Orange Co. Several campaign literature pieces on this have Quirk-Silva pictured with Rotarian Minard Duncan. Scott wondered if she was promoting him as the first inductee for this project. Scott commended Bob Sattler for his outstanding craft talk last week that ran overtime but Bob was not available to fine. Will Abbott was given some friendly advice on being a Recognition Master and how to arrange and verify his facts.
Scott recognized several birthdays including Cathy Gach, for her spouse and Gregg Hickman and Joanne Brannock for their birthdays.
Scott asked Mayor Doug Chaffee to describe some upcoming Fullerton City events. On October 25th, there will be a major opportunity to review how the Fullerton Police Dept. works. Use of City police protection equipment will be shown including how a K9 unit works as well as a chance to see a jail cell. Event will be located at the Police Dept. On May 9th the Love Fullerton event will be held to have local residents gather to work and address some maintenance problems at city and private properties. The goal is to make Fullerton a better city. The starting location is believed to be at the open patio area on east Wilshire.
The program was given by Ken Kaisch on the subject of retirement. Bob Radde in his introduction noted that Ken Kaisch was cursed by an Eskimo woman when he was a child that causes his nose to become red when he lies. Ken noted that he is a retired Episcopalian priest and now plans to retire as a family counselor. He dwelled on the dangers of retirement as a person faces a loss of importance that may lead to deep depression. People look forward to retirement but do not realistically plan for it. The advice on retirement is to take account of your abilities and skills and develop new goals that can make use of your personal gifts. Pursuing such goals will give your life structure and meaning again. Using retirement as a full time vacation will lead to major personality problems. Ken had a photographer take a video of his talk that may be partially incorporated in a book on successful retirement that he is writing.
The meeting was ended a little early by a bell ring from El Presidente Bill Schenk.
