Rota-Scribe: Warren Wimer |
Opening Ceremonies
The meeting started with a big bucks $ necklace being bestowed, without explanation, by our glorious leader upon Past Prez Bill Mathy. The ceremony was topped off by a confused selfie. Flag salute by the decorated Bill Mathy, followed by a thoughtful peace themed prayer led by Jon West. Song Leader of the Day, Greg Hickman led the assemblage in a double Smile with a whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on.
Joe Lins was called upon to introduce newest Rotarian, Mike Cochran, longtime active Fullertonian. Welcome Mike into the The Rotary Club of Fullerton.
Visitors
Warren Wimer didn’t recognize any visiting Rotarians cause there were none, but he did recognize Newest Nine Member Carol Danforth Futterer to introduce her guest Robin Howland (Capriana) and Will Abbott to introduce Chris Rogan, wife of our speaker and their twin daughters, Dana and Claire.
Recognitions
FineMaster & Past President J Richey [like Harry S Truman, no period after J] started with a mass “no pin, cost you a buck” blanket fine that caught more than half of us, as usual (unfortunately). Then J recognized Dan Ouweleen for working so hard on the JOG-A-THON, but paid $20 on behalf of Dan for some reason – not sure why. Told that today he was as old as he has ever been, something happened to Ken Kaisch that had never happened in all his years on this earth, and probably will never happen again – he was rendered speechless! But the red nose shone ever brightly. Rick Crane was recognized in celebration of 31 years with Jeanie, whilst Jim Williams confessed to 43 years marriage to Sally, 88% of which she has shared him with The Rotary Club of Fullerton. Given the choice between telling a lawyer joke and paying a fine, Ron Stock immediately whipped out his wallet and deposited the green.
The U.S.S. Iowa visit, coordinated by Prez Elect Daybell and the Day at the Races, coordinated by Past Prez Terri Grassi are coming up on September 20th and October 25th respectively. Mark your calendars and get signed up!!!
Past Prez Robert Jahncke reminded all to mark up the circulating roster for updates. Hey Bob, who changed the policy to start adding years to the birthdays? Dan O. needs JOG-A-THON help on the entertainment and sponsorship committees. No better way for Newest Nine or recently retired members (like Joe & Grif) to help out and get to know your fellow members better than to volunteer and participate! Dan also recognized the contributions of J, Bill Goetsch and Blake Smith for the success of last year’s event. Brett Ackerman, on behalf of the Boys & Girls Club of Fullerton conveyed thanks for the great support from members of The Rotary Club of Fullerton at Sunday’s fundraiser. Jay Kremer solicited help for the Reading by Nine project and Rani Goyal announced that Zoot is being honored by the Owens Family Foundation at a fundraiser.
Getting over his speechlessness, the aforementioned Kaisch wanted to know how much interest he could collect on the $301 he thought he won last week – but somehow the cash has never shown up [Ed. Note: which does not help future sales a bunch]. Then, in a coordinated slick move coordinated by a Bill (but not the Prez), Ken somehow got “a” blue chip again, but confessed that there was a 4-Way Test problem, so the pot [the cash, that is] continues to grow.
Sad news from Jim Williams concerning Past President, Past District Governor Jim Young who is now in hospice care at Park Vista. No visits, update will be provided next week. Also it was reported that JoAnne Brannock’s son-in-law passed away suddenly. Thoughts and prayers to both the Young family and the Brannock family.
Like a great golf shot, a rare back-hand put away, or hitting the perfect note, a great program brings you back for more. Today we had a great program. Bob Hathaway introduced Hon. James E. Rogan. Starting from most humble beginnings, James has accomplished a lot after being tossed out of school in 10th grade. Too much to repeat here, but I commend you to check out wikipedia.org/wiki/James_E._Rogan. The program revolved around the career and books authored, and really written by James, who is now sitting as a Superior Court judge in the North Court. Rough Edges traces the life of a boy to a man, starting in “a rough-and-tumble childhood in San Francisco's hardscrabble Mission District—where he was raised by his colorful extended family—he became a political junkie at the age of nine” which ultimately led him on his path to UCLA Law School, private practice, prosecutor of hard core gang criminals in the L.A. District Attorney’s office, two term Congressman, Undersecretary of Commerce and Superior Court judge. His second book, Catching Our Flag: Behind the Scenes of a Presidential Impeachment is a consolidation of James’ extensive personal notes during the 1½ years he was the assigned House Judiciary Committee impeachment co-prosecutor of President Clinton, with responsibility for the perjury portion of the case The book is an accurate definitive report on what went on behind the scenes during those turbulent times. Thank you, James, for a terrific program!
Rotary Fellowship - Care & Comfort If you are aware of someone in our Rotary Club that is ill or struggling with the loss of a family member. Please provide that information to Francis Knott, so that she may send a card or flowers on behalf of our Fullerton Rotary Club. Francis has graciously accepted this chair for the current board year. |
