Mike Oates introduced Dr. Hiwhoa Moon to present the program. Dr. Moon’s bio humbled even Mr. Oates. He has been on the board of the World Bank, Korean Gas Co, Department of Economics Korean Government, adjunct professor at the School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University. He has and has met with leaders around the world. Although Moon expressed that he wanted to talk about economics, Mike Oates requested a program on North Korea and unification and so the program followed.
Dr. Moon shared that although he is first an economist; he is being presented as a social scientist to our club and will speak about reunification of North and South Korea. Much instability exists in North Korea, but the regime is very strong. Although widespread talk exists regarding reunification of Korea, but there is no pressure for them to do so. He sees little possibility for reunification in the near future.
Dr. Moon’s program discussed policies and challenges which prevent reunification, North Korea’s struggling economy, and an overview of the North Korea political dynasty which has ruled since the end of WW II.
Following the program, Bill Schenk, shared that Dr. Moon is a Rotarian in South Korea – Bill presented him a four way test coin with this year’s logo on the back.
Hot July afternoon and Bill is off to Seattle so he said good bye to all.
Meeting was adjourned at 1:21 p.m.
